The trans meme community on Reddit is about so much more than jokes

TwitterFacebook

There are dozens of subreddits for the trans community on Reddit, each designed to meet a certain psychological need.

There’s r/asktransgender, dedicated to people’s questions about the community, r/transgender, a subreddit for trans news, and r/transtimelines, where people can document their transitions. These are large and vibrant groups, with followers in the tens of thousands.

But for some folks who are just coming out as trans, memes and GIFs — not traditional, location-based support groups or advice-based subreddits — are where they first find community.

Take r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns, Reddit’s oldest active subreddit for trans-centered shitposts, memes, and GIFs.  Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns currently has over 84,300 “shitposters,” many of whom post meaningful content about transphobia or transitioning, then disguise it in shitpost robes or meme make-up.  Read more…

Christine Hallquist could become America’s first trans governor, trolls be damned

TwitterFacebook

If the only news you ever read came from Twitter, you’d think America was some kind of post-apocalyptic political landscape. And you wouldn’t be entirely wrong.

But it’s not all dystopia. If you travel to Vermont, for example, you’ll find Democrat Christine Hallquist, who won her primary this August and could very well become the country’s first openly trans governor.

It’s a remarkably modern accomplishment, and one — for liberals at least — well worth getting excited about. Just don’t dilute your political high and look at what people tweet at her

‘Queer Eye’s first trans participant speaks out about the episode

TwitterFacebook

For a show that features extraordinarily handsome cis gay men who do elaborate makeovers, Queer Eye has generated a shockingly low level of controversy.

Still, exceptions exist. Some critics took issue with this show’s handling of its first ever trans client, Skyler Jay. In a new interview with them., Jay defended the Fab Five and explained why the episode took the direction it did.

Specifically, Jay defended his interactions with Tan France, who admitted he hadn’t really interacted with an trans person before.

Jay explained to France that he may not have interacted with an openly trans person before — but they were so many of them out there. Read more…
