Daimler’s semi-autonomous truck puts self-driving features on the road

Daimler trucks are going autonomous — eventually.

For now, Level 2 (L2) partial automation will have to suffice. The vehicle company behind Mercedes-Benz cars announced Monday at CES 2019 that its new Freightliner Cascadia big-rig will include higher levels of robotic driving. The semi-autonomous trucks will start production in July in North America. It’s not fully self-driving, but it’s pushing the trucking industry deeper into an autonomous mode. 

Truck CEO Martin Daum admitted he was skeptical of autonomous capabilities back in 2015, when Daimler unveiled its Freightliner Inspiration autonomous concept truck. Now he sees Level 4 autonomy (full autonomy in most situations, climates, and environments) coming to trucks within the decade. Read more…

UPS’s new electric truck is emission-free — and really, really adorable

Just look at those smooth edges and friendly exterior — UPS’s newest delivery truck is quite the crowd-pleaser.

The internet let out a collective “awww” when the delivery service announced its new electric truck partnership with British EV company Arrival this week.  

UPS will have 35 of the zero-emission EVs with 150-mile range and a driver assistance system to help with driver fatigue. A trial program with the fleet will hit the road by the end of the year in Paris and London. Sorry America, no cute trucks for you yet.  Read more…

Garbage trucks may soon be much quieter.

Volvo introduced a new electric garbage truck design this week called the Volvo FE Electric. The truck is built to optimize efficiency and quietly hauling away trash. 

The lithium-ion powered truck has a 125-mile range and is envisioned as the perfect trash compacting truck with no emissions. It’s specifically built for a quieter ride with fewer vibrations for garbage workers riding along — and for residents who can typically hear large garbage trucks rattling through the neighborhood.
