After seeing Us, Jordan Peele’s follow up to Get Out, you immediately understand why Rorschach test imagery was used so prominently in its marketing.

Like the famous psychological ink blot test, Us is a movie that invites you to make your own meaning out of its evocative imagery and themes — acting like a reflection of your own thoughts. The short answer to the question, “What does Us mean?” is, essentially, “What does it mean to you?”

The longer answer is that it can mean a whole lot of different things to different people. And that’s where this article comes in. Although it’d be impossible to “explain” exactly what Us is trying to say — and although that ambiguity is one of its greatest accomplishments — we do have some theories about what it all means. Cali and Noelle Sheldon, the twins who played Ross and Rachel’s adorable baby Emma in Seasons 9 and 10 of Friends, are all grown up now and starring in Jordan Peele’s latest nightmare. 

The Sheldon sisters, now 16, appear as Becca and Lindsey Tyler, the twin daughters of Elisabeth Moss’s character, Kitty.

Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ will haunt you, and not just in the ways you’d expect

When the credits rolled on Us, I realized I needed a minute.

It wasn’t that I didn’t like the film – quite the opposite. It was that the film, written and directed by Jordan Peele, is so rich, so layered, so diabolically clever and emotionally astute, that it felt an enormous undertaking to process in a single sitting. 

Several hours and many conversations later, I’m still convinced this film has secrets I haven’t uncovered yet, and I’m just eager for my next chance to go digging through it again.
