‘The Twilight Zone’ is one of the most quietly bingeable shows on Netflix

TwitterFacebook

It is a binge as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between watching yet another season of Gilmore Girls and an ill-advised, impromptu viewing of The Grudge. Its duration lies between “No way do I have time for that!” and “Yeah, I’ve got an afternoon to kill.” It is an area of Netflix known only to your queue as..The Twilight Zone.

With Jordan Peele’s reimagining coming to CBS next month and four of the series’ five seasons currently available on Netflix, now is the perfect time to revisit the iconic 1960s sci-fi anthology The Twilight Zone

But be forewarned, this is one streaming sleeper cell that can and will suck you into its twisted, black-and-white hellscape, an interdimensional place of obsession that you (and all of your spare time) will likely struggle to escape. I should know — I’m still there. Read more…

‘RoboCop’ is a prescient satire worth revisiting

TwitterFacebook

There is no movie more prescient than RoboCop.

The 1987 action movie may seem ridiculous on the surface — a cop gets turned into a robot cop to fight crime in futuristic Detroit — but it takes aim at some of the United States’ biggest issues that are still affecting us today, including privatization of public institutions, gentrification, unchecked capitalism, corruption, and television media.

Yes, RoboCop is over the top, but that’s what makes it so fun. That, combined with its messages that still hold merit 32 years later, makes it worth revisiting. Read more…

I’ll never quit ‘Hitman 2’ if it keeps inviting me back for more

I feel the most tense right after a kill. There’s still a job to finish and an escape to stage. It’s never easy, and if I fail… that’s it. I can’t go after the target ever again.
That’s the brilliance of Hitman 2’s Elusive Target challenges. They’r…

Watch of the Week: ‘The Magicians’ is back, it’s weird, and it’s better than ever

TwitterFacebook

When Season 3 of The Magicians ended with the memories of nearly every main character’s magical lives being wiped to create nonmagical personas (to better protect them from an unknowable Beast who had taken over the body of their friend), there was a lot riding on Season 4 to bring that totally bonkers plotline home to something resembling coherency. How is there supposed to be a show called The Magicians if none of the main crew have access to magic?

As of the first episode of the fourth season, there still isn’t an answer as to how the Brakebills Seven will emerge from that particular conundrum, but there’s even better news: The Magicians is still an excellent show.  Read more…

‘I’m Sorry’ has returned and Andrea Savage is still my personal hero

Are you there, Andrea? It’s me, Alison.
Sometime between the series finale of Gossip Girl and the birth of Kate Middleton’s second baby, I gave up emulating the women I saw on TV. For too many of my teenage years, I had found myself struggling to pul…

‘Below’ is a tough, disturbing dungeon crawler

TwitterFacebook

The deeper I burrow into Below, the deeper it burrows into my mind.

Below is a game of exploration, repetition, tenacity, and bravery. It exists at a crossroads of engrossing and off-putting; it’s enticing with its mysteries but can just as easily become so frustrating that it demands breaks. What makes Below special, though, is that it’s inescapable even during those breaks.

Amid the big blockbusters of 2018 like Red Dead Redemption 2, Spider-Man, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, there sits Below. It feels so small, which I guess it is in a horizontal sense, but its depth — its literal depth — is unmatched. Read more…

‘Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23’ is the throwback binge you deserve

I don’t love using the term “underrated.” (Generally speaking, I think we rate things just fine.) But when it comes to Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23, I’m happy to make an exception. This show is indeed an underrated treasure, one that you need to…

‘Return of the Obra Dinn’ reinvents the murder mystery game

TwitterFacebook

Lucas Pope sure knows how to undersell his games — which, by all accounts, continue to push the limit of what we can expect from the medium.

The one-man powerhouse first exploded onto the scene with his wildly popular and morally existential bureaucratic puzzle game Papers, Please. Five years later, he’s released the equally undefinable Return of the Obra Dinn, described on his website as “An Insurance Adventure with Minimal Colour.”

LOL — I guess that’s one way to put it!

Showing an unmatched skill for turning the most seemingly boring scenarios and basic mechanics into something ingenious, Pope’s new game is in a league of its own.  Read more…

‘Overcooked!’ for two is the date night you deserve this weekend

“Put the pot on the stove, not on the ground!”
“No, it’s there because I’m chopping onions!”
I really hate cooking. Sure, you could point out that I probably hate it because I never practice, I refuse to follow recipes, and I think timers are f…

Yes, ‘Survivor’ is still on – and it’s still really damn good

TwitterFacebook

Just about every time I mention my undying appreciation for Survivor, I get some variation on this response: “That show is still on??”

Yes, it’s still on. The 37th season — there are two each year — kicks off on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The theme for the coming season is “David vs. Goliath.” At the start, it’ll be a tribe of 10 underdogs, folks who have had to fight for everything, facing off against 10 proven winners at life.

Those starting tribes tend to matter less as the season goes on, but let’s get all of you doubters and neophytes caught up on what Survivor actually looks like in 2018. Read more…

‘Little Dragon Cafe’ is the magical spiritual successor to ‘Harvest Moon’

What defines the heart-warming yet addictive bliss of Harvest Moon?
Some might point to its farming sim element, which bore new and improved iterations in later games like Stardew Valley and Battle Chef Brigade. Or maybe it was more the long-term att…
