17-year-old Chloe Kim is the hangry Olympic champion we need right now

TwitterFacebook

America, meet your new Olympic hero.

Chloe Kim is only 17 years old. On Tuesday morning, she landed two 1080s in the women’s snowboard halfpipe to win her first Olympic gold medal.

Even more impressive? She was hella hangry while she did it. Here’s what she tweeted right before her final run:

Wish I finished my breakfast sandwich but my stubborn self decided not to and now I’m getting hangry

Damn, we can all relate. Except the part where she won a gold medal. This isn’t her only food-related tweet, either. Behold, her churro wisdom: Read more…

The ‘darkest building on Earth’ is at the Winter Olympic Games

“There’s something about this that’s so black, it’s like how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black.”

Spinal Tap’s inane discussion of their pitch-black album cover is the best way we can get a handle on the brand-new pavilion unveiled at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in South Korea.

A new project commissioned by Hyundai, British architect Asif Khan’s 10-meter-high temporary building has been erected specifically for the Games, which officially begin on Friday, Feb. 9.

In what’s being called “the darkest building on Earth,” Khan’s structure has employed a sprayable version of the ominous Vantablack pigment. Created by UK researchers in 2014 and trademarked by British artist Anish Kapoor, Vantablack is touted as the darkest known artificial substance in the world — it absorbs up to 99.965 percent of light that hits its surface.  Read more…

These LGBTQ Olympians are here to break records (and tiny queer hearts)

TwitterFacebook

It’s Olympics time, and I’m proudly rooting for Team Gay.

Restrain your rage, Facebook bots — I’m fully aware that Team Gay technically doesn’t exist, and I’ll be thrilled if anyone from Team USA wins gold (solely for the Leslie Jones reaction). It’s just that out LGBTQ Olympians are a relatively new phenomenon, with the first out gay Olympian not appearing until 1988

Which is why I encourage you all to root for the following LGBTQ Olympic athletes, even if you’re not queer and find all sports — including incredibly good ice skating-based ones — banal.
