Streaming is revolutionizing sports broadcasting from within

TwitterFacebook

Over one hundred million people watch the Super Bowl every year, whether diehard football fans crowding around the TV or those two dudes who seem to show up at your party every year just to eat all of the bean dip. The big game is the most popular TV event in America, but this year its ratings tanked dramatically — except online. Though the NFL playoff final drew seven percent fewer viewers than last year’s game (that’s around eight million people), its online audience actually grew by 15 percent. Read more…

U.S. Olympian Gus Kenworthy questions Ivanka Trump’s closing ceremony appearance

TwitterFacebook

Ivanka Trump’s appearance at the Winter Olympics has ruffled a few feathers — especially those of U.S. Olympic freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy.

On Sunday, the Team USA athlete delivered a bewildered tweet about Trump’s appearance at the closing ceremony in Pyeongchang.

“Everybody here has worked so hard to make it to the Olympics and have the opportunity to walk in the closing ceremony! Well… Everyone except Ivanka. Honestly, tf is she doing here??” he tweeted.

K-pop and a kid guitarist ruled the Olympics closing ceremony

TwitterFacebook

Athletes bid farewell to Pyeongchang on Sunday at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

But among the usual speeches, rituals, and parades, K-pop and a kid guitarist came out on top. Or they were the crowd-pleasers, anyway — the closing ceremony is blessedly free of competition.

13-year-old guitarist Yang Tae-hwan played a variation on “Winter” from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons as part of a celebration of “hallyu” — a term used to describe the “Korean wave” of ubiquity that Korean popular culture has achieved over the past several decades. Read more…

Renegade squirrel narrowly avoids death by snowboard at the Olympics

TwitterFacebook

A squirrel with a death wish was nearly run over during the parallel giant slalom at the 2018 Winter Olympics on Saturday.

Austrian snowboarder Daniela Ulbing was in the middle of her run when a squirrel suddenly ran onto the slope just inches in front of her snowboard.

In typical squirrel fashion, the rodent came face-to-face with the moment of impact before deciding the slalom course was a bad place to be. It turned around only after nearly colliding with Ulbing.  Read more…

Dude crashes Olympic skating rink wearing only a tutu and monkey sock

TwitterFacebook

The men’s 1,000m speed skating event at the Winter Olympics may have been the most risqué event in Pyeongchang yet, thanks to a nearly-naked man in a tutu with a monkey pouch covering his privates.

Nope, this is not a joke.

With the words “PEACE + LOVE” written on his bare chest, a semi-nude streaker (quite possibly the infamous Mark Roberts) barreled down the seats of the venue and onto the ice right after the men finished competing on the ice. Thanks to this blurry footage caught by @mhj.kooij on Instagram, you can watch him land on the rink, strip down to a tutu and then fall flat on his face.  Read more…
