Women are sharing their experiences of receiving unsolicited advances from men

TwitterFacebook

If you’ve ever had to pretend to have a boyfriend or husband to get out of an uncomfortable or threatening situation, then you’ll know that it can be a terrifying and isolating experience.

But, you’re not alone and these responses to Jameela Jamil’s tweets are proof of that.

The star of The Good Place tweeted that she was shopping with a friend when a man made advances at her. She told him she had a boyfriend and thanked him, but the situation quickly escalated into one of harassment.

Was out at the shops with my friend. Man ogles me. Man then approaches me to give me his number. I explain I have a boyfriend but thank him for the offer. Man then threatens my career, saying I better remember that I rejected him. And then Shouts at me that I’m low class… 🤷🏽‍♀️

Moms have the power to transform child care in America. This is what stands in their way.

TwitterFacebook

A new mom never knows when she’ll feel utterly alone and desperate. Maybe it’ll be when she’s laid out her pumping equipment in a closet-sized room at work only to realize she’s forgotten the power cord. Or when her bus stalls on its way home, and she knows her infant son will need to go directly to sleep after she picks him up late from daycare. Or when she’s finally crawled into bed and it’s at that precise moment her baby wakes up screaming.

Sometimes parenthood is downright grueling. But the frustration inherent in moments like these is compounded by the reality that American politics has made a sport of using families, particularly mothers, as heartwarming props but abandons them when it comes to policy.  Read more…

This campaign wants UK politicians to wake up to the dangers of the gender data gap

TwitterFacebook

The real-world ramifications of the gender data gap are all around, us all the time.

From the size of the phone currently in your palm, to the temperature of the office you’re sitting in, to the way your car has been built, to the way the medicine you take has been made.

A new book by feminist campaigner and author Caroline Criado Perez has uncovered the dangers of not collecting data about women, and the fact that data bias is putting women’s lives at risk.

A new GoFundMe campaign led by writer and activist Tracy King aims to send a copy of the book — Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men — to every MP in the country in the hope that lawmakers will take action about this important issue.  Read more…

We aren’t collecting data about women and it’s literally putting their lives at risk

TwitterFacebook

Night after night at the stroke of midnight, the street lights in my hometown would switch off, plunging everything into darkness. I lived in this town for three years during my twenties — three years of having a self-imposed curfew because of local authority cuts.

During those years, I had to make like Cinderella and get home before 12. Not because my car would turn into a pumpkin, but because I was terrified I’d find myself outdoors in the pitch black night. Every plan I made had to factor in the impending darkness that would arrive like clockwork, bringing with it an immediate threat to my safety. Without setting out to do so, my local authority had failed me.  Read more…

Nike’s ‘Dream Crazier’ ad is an empowering visual love letter to women

TwitterFacebook

“If we show emotion we’re called dramatic. If we want to play against men, we’re nuts. And if we dream of equal opportunity, delusional,” the voiceover in Nike’s new ad, titled “Dream Crazier,” begins.

The empowering video — which debuted during Sunday night’s Oscars and is voiced by Serena Williams — goes on to call out a slew of gender-based double standards and phrases used to put down women who strive to achieve greatness.

“When we stand for something, we’re unhinged. When we’re too good there’s something wrong with us. And if we get angry, we’re hysterical, irrational, or just being crazy,” Williams continues, while footage of some of the world’s greatest athletes — all of whom happen to be women — plays in the background. Donald Trump Jr. shared a meme about women and it backfired spectacularly

TwitterFacebook

Donald Trump Jr. might want to hold off sharing Twitter memes for a bit while he recovers from the internet dragging him.

Following the State of the Union, the president’s son decided to tweet a meme about the Democratic women of Congress on Wednesday, who wore suffragette white to the address to make a powerful visual statement.

Trump Jr. tweeted the meme — a photo of the women with the words “NOT ONE AMERICAN FLAG AMONG THEM” across it — to his 3.3 million followers on Wednesday, adding, “Speaks for itself and no one is at all surprised.”
