Local news sites DNAinfo and Gothamist shut down

DNAinfo and Gothamist have both shut down, a week after reporters and editors at the local news sites unionized. Their archives seem to have disappeared — if you visit either front page, or any article, you’re redirected to a letter from CEO Joe Ricketts (pictured above), who trots out some growth numbers before saying: But DNAinfo is, at the end of the day, a business, and… Read More

How long it takes to get used to the iPhone X

TwitterFacebook

Apple’s catchphrase, “Think different” is so well-known that it’s not often used in its original context, more often pulled out as an ironic dig when the company does something users don’t like (eliminating a certain jack comes to mind).

In the case of the iPhone X, though, the irony disappears. Users will definitely need to think differently as they encounter an iPhone with no home button, a front camera that can scan your face, and a “notch” — all firsts for the iPhone. The iPhone X doesn’t just have new features; it introduces an entirely new way of interacting with the device.

Scientists found a mysterious void in the Great Pyramid of Giza thanks to particle physics

TwitterFacebook

A void secreted away in the largest pyramid in Giza has been revealed thanks to some space-age technology.

Scientists used cutting-edge imaging techniques to see how particles called muons behaved deep within the Great Pyramid, also known as Khufu’s Pyramid.

The behavior of those particles — which are created by cosmic rays zipping around Earth’s atmosphere — revealed the 30-meter-long void in the structure, which is around 450 feet tall and more than 4,000 years old.

Smart kid sells place in the iPhone X line on Instagram

TwitterFacebook

If you’re going to line up for the iPhone X, why not make some money out of it?

Sydney kid Lee Cselko took advantage of the highly awaited smartphone’s expectedly long launch queues to save two spots in the line for Friday’s release date, reports Daily Mail.

Posting on Instagram, Cselko was selling the place next to him in the queue, spot number 25.

“Selling this spot in line for the iPhone X,” he wrote on a whiteboard, and posted to Instagram — with his phone number, a rather risky thing to post to the internet.

According to the Daily Mail, Cselko landed $500 for the spot, not bad for bringing an extra chair. Read more…

Billionaire Joe Ricketts has thrown a temper tantrum so big he shut his own company down.

After a months-long battle, employees at the recently-merged news outlets voted to become members of Writers Guild of America East about a week ago.

Hulu’s ‘Runaways’ is bringing a big change to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

TwitterFacebook

Longtime fans of Marvel’s Runaways comics might be inclined to argue that, among the company’s near-countless properties, the beloved series requires the least amount of tweaking to be adapted for Hollywood. And from the looks of the new series coming to Hulu this month, its showrunners, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, agree.

Runaways is a relatively recent addition to the Marvel Universe — debuting in 2003 from writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Adrian Alphona — which means that unlike many of the older-school Marvel properties created by the legendary Stan Lee and his equally iconic collaborators, the property didn’t come with decades of continuity baggage or need any significant updates to get in step with modern sensibilities.  Read more…
