Scientists detect a repeating signal from deep space, but its origin is a mystery

To begin, there’s zero evidence it’s aliens.

But for just the second time, a team of astronomers detected a flash of repeating of radio waves emanating from beyond our Milky Way galaxy. Using a new, sprawling Canadian telescope dubbed CHIME — which is the size of six hockey rinks — scientists identified the short, repeating burst in the summer of 2018 and published their results Wednesday in the journal Nature.

The source of these super distant signals, from some 1.5 billion light years away, is still largely a mystery. What’s agreed upon is that for these radio waves to travel millions of light years and arrive at Earth as strong signals, they must have a profoundly potent origin — perhaps a powerful explosion in a another galaxy.  Read more…

Stephen Hawking had multiple universes on his mind when he died

TwitterFacebook

Before his death on March 14, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking was deep in thought about the possibility of universes that exist well beyond our own — places with completely unknown galaxies, stars, and planets.

While there’s no evidence yet of any such parallel universes, also known as a multiverse, Hawking had been working with fellow theorist Thomas Hertog to prove that it’s possible to observe the cosmos and find evidence of these mysterious places. Hertog continues to research the deeper questions of the universe at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Leuven in Belgium.  Read more…

COSMOS is officially returning for another season.

And yes, everyone’s favorite astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, will be hosting. The season will air in spring 2019 on FOX and Nat Geo.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane will serve as executive producer of the show, just as he did when it was revived back in 2015. It featured plenty of mind-blowing science facts, animated history lessons, and Tyson riding around in a weird silver spaceship.

Yup. We got the band back together. Another season of Cosmos is officially real. “COSMOS: Possible Worlds” To air on @FOXTV & @NatGeoChannnel in a year — Spring 2019. Be therepic.twitter.com/BGFJG11Pim
