At Tuesday’s Google I/O keynote talk in Mountain View, California, CEO Sundar Pichai introduced the gathered developers to Google Duplex — a version of Google Assistant that will make actual phone calls for you and, in the process, trick the person on the other end of the line into thinking she’s talking to a real-life human. Yes, verbal mm-hmm ticks included.
While currently limited to certain tasks like booking appointments, we shouldn’t expect AIs like Duplex to remain that way. As the day-one Google I/O keynote came to a close Tuesday in Mountain View View, California, it was clear that the tech giant had left the right impression on the developers in attendance: Specifically, one of awe. Of particular note was the wide range of tasks handled by Google Assistant — tasks that, at present, Apple’s Siri could only dream of (could Siri dream).

Google wants to broaden your horizons — and maybe put some “fake news” to rest — with its updated News app.
The company rolled out the new program during its I/O conference TuesdayIt uses artificial intelligence to show everyone a broad perspective on the same information, unlike, say, the Facebook News Feed, which varies wildly from person to person. In other words, a story about President Donald Trump and Iran may incorporate information from a number of outlets, but it will look the same to everyone who sees it.
When you log in, you’ll see For You, Headlines, Favorites, and Newsstand sections. The first is filled with stories that the service thinks you’ll be interested in, while the “Headlines” section is populated with globally trending stories. “Favorites” lets you save stories, and Newsstand contains content from magazines and other outlets.
