The Atlantic Ocean is packed with storms. What’s going on?

TwitterFacebook

The Atlantic Ocean is alive.

Including Hurricane Florence, there are currently four named storms — tempests with winds of at least 39 mph — churning in the Atlantic. This ties the record for the most named storms in the Atlantic at any one time.

And there could be more: There’s yet another collection of thunderstorms off in the Gulf of Mexico that has a decent, 50 percent shot, of becoming the fifth well-developed, named storm.

While there’s substantial evidence that climate change is having a major impact on the behavior of hurricanes, this current flurry of storms falls within the realm of expected activity for this time of year.  Read more…

Trump says his response to the hurricane that killed almost 3,000 people was ‘incredibly successful’

With a monster hurricane spinning towards the east coast, President Donald Trump took a moment during a briefing on Tuesday to herald the awful, delayed response to 2017’s Hurricane Maria as an “unsung success,” sparking outrage online.

During briefing on approach of Hurricane #Florence, Pres. Trump calls government’s response to Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria “tremendous.”

Hurricane Florence isn’t the only storm churning in the Atlantic Ocean.

At the moment, Florence, Hurricane Isaac, and Hurricane Helene are all swirling in different parts of the ocean at the peak of hurricane season.

NASA astronaut and current International Space Station resident Ricky Arnold was able to capture the sheer breadth of Hurricane Florence, while showcasing Isaac and an outer band of Helene in new photos posted on Twitter Monday.

Hurricane Florence is on its way to the East Coast. Here’s what to expect.

TwitterFacebook

Despite facing heavy winds late last week, Hurricane Florence beat the odds.

The hurricane, which is now whipping up winds at 130 mph, is a Category 4 storm and forecast to make landfall later this week on the coast of the Carolinas.

“Florence is quickly becoming a powerful hurricane,” The National Hurricane Center said in a statement  Monday morning. “Data from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that Florence has continued to rapidly strengthen.”

If it makes landfall in North Carolina as a Category 4 storm, it will be the largest storm to hit the state since Hurricane Hazel in 1954. Read more…
