There are many layers to great art — sometimes literally. 

We are reminded of this fact by researchers at the Art Institute of Chicago’s Center for Scientific Studies in the Arts, who have revealed hidden details lurking beneath the Pablo Picasso masterpiece “La miséreuse accroupie.” 

While the presence of another artwork — specifically, a painting of the Catalan countryside by a different artist — below Picasso’s “Crouching Beggar” has been known about since the 1990s, Science reports that we now are able to see previously hidden elements of Picasso’s work.  Read more…

Leonardo da Vinci painting sells for eye-watering $450 million

It’ll surely be a while before you see this much money being thrown around again.

Leonardo da Vinci’s 500-year-old painting “Salvator Mundi” has broken the record for the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction, selling for an eye-watering $450,312,500, including buyer fees. 

The sale decisively eclipsed the previous record held by Picasso’s “Les Femmes d’Alger (Version ‘O’)” — which sold for $179 million in 2015. 

A crowd packed into the Christie’s saleroom in New York City gasped as the price jumped from $332 million to $350 million in one bid. Then again from $370 million to its final cost of $400 million, in a bidding war lasting just under 20 minutes. Read more…
