This hyperloop startup is doing the unthinkable: being realistic

A hyperloop startup is sharing its vision for ultra-fast travel via pod at presentations in hotel ballrooms around the world — and a flash-bang demo in Las Vegas the presentations are not.

But that’s a good thing.

Meet Transpod, a Canadian hyperloop startup that thinks its proprietary technology — which it says improves upon magnetic levitation in both cost and efficiency — can enable the next, as the founders call it, “true leap forward” in transportation.

Founded in 2015, Transpod is just one of a handful of hyperloop startups trying to make the concept popularized by Elon Musk of levitated, low-resistance travel via tube a reality. It has $15 million in seed funding, which may sound promising, but it’s considerably less than other hyperloop startups, and the company has yet to debut a prototype or even run a demo. Read more…

Virgin Galactic’s space plane makes 1st powered test flight since 2014 accident

Virgin Galactic, which aims to eventually bring paying customers to the edge of space, is flying high again.

The Richard Branson-founded company just performed the first rocket-powered test flight of its SpaceShipTwo space plane since the first vehicle was destroyed in a fatal accident on October 31, 2014.

This SpaceShipTwo — called the VSS Unity — took to the air attached to its carrier aircraft on Thursday and flew for about an hour before being released.

Hyperloop One races to new top speed, and a famous billionaire chairman

Hyperloop One set a new company record when it reached a blistering 242 mph outside of Las Vegas on Friday — and days later, it gained a famous billionaire.

The company named Richard Branson its chairman on Monday, rebranding itself as Virgin Hyperloop One, Axios reports. It hopes to one day zip commuters across the country at 700 mph.

Virgin Hyperloop One’s previous tests in the Mojave Desert clearly impressed the global airline tycoon, who has helped secure over $100 million in funding for the company since October.
