NASA wants the internet to nickname a distant object 1 billion miles past Pluto

TwitterFacebook

Alright, folks. NASA needs our help.

The space agency is asking people on the internet — yes, that means you — to help it select a fun nickname for a pretty dryly named but still important object: (486958) 2014 MU69.

MU69 is an object — or possibly two objects — floating in the Kuiper belt, Pluto’s part of space which is filled with small objects left over from the dawn of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago.

Scientists need a nickname for MU69 because it’s going to get a lot of attention in the coming years.

On Jan. 1, 2019, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft — which flew past Pluto in July 2015 — will fly by MU69, taking an up-close look at a world (or worlds) never seen in detail before. Read more…

Scientists found a mysterious void in the Great Pyramid of Giza thanks to particle physics

TwitterFacebook

A void secreted away in the largest pyramid in Giza has been revealed thanks to some space-age technology.

Scientists used cutting-edge imaging techniques to see how particles called muons behaved deep within the Great Pyramid, also known as Khufu’s Pyramid.

The behavior of those particles — which are created by cosmic rays zipping around Earth’s atmosphere — revealed the 30-meter-long void in the structure, which is around 450 feet tall and more than 4,000 years old.

The pyramids.

Trump’s pick for NASA chief has an appalling record on LGBTQ rights, and that matters for the space agency

Jim Bridenstine has a problem.
The Oklahoma congressman and President Donald Trump’s nominee for NASA administrator really wants the job, but he may not get it, and not for the reasons you might think.

Act fast, it’s your last chance to send your name to Mars

TwitterFacebook

The clock is ticking to have your name launched into space.

The InSight Mars lander is scheduled to head to the red planet in May, but the end of the day Wednesday marks the deadline to get an official boarding pass. That means that even if you can’t get to Mars next year, your name can.

NASA is etching names onto a microchip that will be placed aboard the spacecraft. The lander, InSight, is expected to land on Mars next November.

Today is the LAST DAY to send your name to Mars on @NASAInSight! Sign up here by 11:59pm ET: https://t.co/23M4kWplR4 pic.twitter.com/PTKA3eVHIP

NASA’s jack-o’-lanterns are next level

Watching the annual NASA Jet Propulsion Lab pumpkin-carving contest is a great way to feel insecure in your own skills.

The scientists pulled out all the stops and created science-inspired masterpieces out of the seasonal gourd. The video above shows the seventh annual contest in action. Other notable entries were posted on social media.

There was a Mars Curiosity rover pumpkin, a War of the Worlds fighting machine, and a take on the InSight spacecraft.
