Pennsylvania attorney general sues Uber over 2016 data breach

TwitterFacebook

Uber’s bad days are far from over. Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro sued Uber on Monday for not disclosing a massive data breach for more than a year after it occurred in 2016.

Shapiro’s lawsuit alleged that Uber violated Pennsylvania state law by not notifying customers within a “reasonable amount of time,” The Hill reported. Shapiro can seek up to $1,000 in fines for every violation.

“Uber violated Pennsylvania law by failing to put our residents on timely notice of this massive data breach,” Shapiro said in a statement, according to The Hill. “Instead of notifying impacted consumers of the breach within a reasonable amount of time, Uber hid the incident for over a year – and actually paid the hackers to delete the data and stay quiet. That’s just outrageous corporate misconduct, and I’m suing to hold them accountable and recover for Pennsylvanians.” Read more…

Uber and Waymo just reached a $245 million settlement

The legal battle between two of the biggest tech titans is finally over — at least for now.

The attorney representing Waymo, the self-driving car company spun out of Google, settled its court case with ride-hailing giant Uber on Friday.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is set to receive 0.34 percent of Uber’s equity at a $72 billion valuation as part of the agreement.

The highly-anticipated trial, which started this week, involved Uber allegedly stealing trade secrets from Alphabet by hiring former employee Anthony Levandowski. As part of the settlement, Uber has agreed to work with Waymo so that certain software is credited to Google and not incorporated in Uber’s systems. Read more…

Former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick keeps his cool during self-driving car courtroom drama

TwitterFacebook

Known for his fiery, overly aggressive approach to business, ousted Uber CEO Travis Kalanick seemed laid back and calm, if maybe a bit nervous while sipping on a water bottle, when he testified in a San Francisco court on Tuesday.

Kalanick appeared in U.S. District Judge William Alsup’s courtroom as part of the ongoing legal battle between two of the largest autonomous vehicle developers: Waymo and Uber.

After Kalanick resigned in June, he’s been elusive, releasing only a few statements. But Tuesday afternoon in the U.S. District Court he spoke — or at least responded to questioning — for nearly an hour. He was by no means effusive, but while wearing a suit and tie, he promptly answered all questions and didn’t come across as defensive or evasive.  Read more…
