To improve Uber’s driver app, he hits the road as an Uber driver

TwitterFacebook

Uber’s head of driver product is proud of his 96 rides (and no tickets … so far).

Daniel Danker knows they’re nothing compared to the thousands of rides some drivers have under their belts. But every rider he drops off helps him understand the Uber service — and provides more insight than anything he’d get from a feedback survey or second-hand notes.

So a few times a month, he opens the separate Uber driver app and cruises around San Francisco for a few hours, picking up passengers, earning tips, and making chitchat with riders in the backseat of his Mazda station wagon. (He lets them know he’s an Uber employee and not a regular driver.) Read more…

Uber just made the largest tech deal in Middle East history

TwitterFacebook

Uber spent $3.1 billion to dominate competition in the Middle East.

It announced Tuesday that it reached an agreement to buy Dubai-based Careem, which operates in 15 countries including Morocco, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The deal was for $1.4 billion in cash, $1.7 billion in loans — and marks the biggest tech industry deal in the region outside of Israel, according to the Associated Press

The company will operate with its two co-founders under Uber as its own brand — for now. On Careem’s website, the company wrote, “We are still Careem.” Read more…

Uber wants to be the ‘Amazon of transportation.’ BMW and Daimler might do it first.

Two major car makers just out “Ubered” Uber.
Last year, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said he wanted the app to do it all: individual rides, carpools, food deliveries, electric bicycles, e-scooters, self-driving vehicles, and even flying taxis. He…

Lyft reportedly will beat Uber to IPO

TwitterFacebook

The two competing ride-hailing apps Lyft and Uber both filed paperwork before the end of 2018 to go public in 2019. Now it looks like Lyft’s initial public (IPO) offering will beat out Uber’s.

CNBC reported Wednesday that Lyft’s IPO will launch around March 18, while Uber’s will need a few more weeks to prepare.

Uber dwarfs Lyft in most ways — it’s valued at around $90 billion, while CNBC said Lyft’s latest valuation is around $20 million. Uber also has a vast presence. It’s available in more than 600 cities around the world while Lyft only operates in the U.S. and Canada.  Read more…

Lyft and Uber offer serious Super Bowl discounts

TwitterFacebook

It’s the Super Bowl this weekend and even if you’re not a fan, you can score some sweet deals.

Uber and Lyft are offering discounts for riders in Atlanta, but everyone can take advantage of free delivery for Uber Eats orders. Starting Saturday, a promo code will be available in the Uber Eats app and is good for free food delivery through Monday. The fee is usually about $5.

For fans of the two teams, the Patriots and Rams, Uber is offering “Unhappy Hour” after the game. That’s right, instead of rewarding the winners, the losers get a consolation prize — free rides for Uber Rewards members for up to an hour after the game. You know, to mope in peace.  Read more…

On my way home from the gym Tuesday evening, I was pleasantly surprised to see an invite to join Uber Rewards on the ride-hailing app.

Taxi-sharing at CES was a huge disappointment

TwitterFacebook

Fresh off my flight from San Francisco to Las Vegas for the annual CES tech conference, I opened my phone and tried to order a taxi.

Yes, a traditional cab like from the movies. But this wasn’t just any old cab ride — I was trying to share a taxi with strangers going my way using an app called Bandwagon.

My go-to ride-hailing apps are Lyft and Uber, but the top tech wranglers from CES — the massive tech trade show that brought me to Las Vegas — were pushing a taxi-share service, so I felt compelled to give it a try.

On the CES website and official mobile app, the transportation options include Bandwagon in a prominent section. Read more…
