BMW makes sure we can’t escape voice assistants while driving

TwitterFacebook

Another “wake word” has entered the lexicon. Instead of “OK, Google” or “Hey, Alexa,” this time it’s “Hey, BMW.”

With BMW’s new virtual assistant, coming to the German car maker in 2019, voice commands are front and center in the car. It’s a new way to interact with your vehicle.

The assistant was revealed Thursday at a TechCrunch Disrupt main stage event. BMW senior vice president of digital products, Dieter May, showed it off, extolling its skills beyond “just voice commands.” He said the assistant would “live side by side with you” — which is either super helpful or super creepy. Amazon’s Alexa will soon do your bidding through your car infotainment console

TwitterFacebook

Amazon doesn’t just want to compete with Google and Apple in your home. It’s coming for your car, too. Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant will soon be “Hey Alexa” ready through the car infotainment system — a territory Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have inhabited for years.

On Thursday, Amazon released a developer kit to integrate Alexa’s AI skills into car infotainment systems. Soon you could ask Alexa for directions, to make calls, stream songs, search for nearby restaurants or hotels — just like you do with devices, like the Echo, at home. Except you don’t need to plug your phone into your car, the car is the voice assistant.  Read more…

TwitterFacebook

Siri’s getting a makeover — at least that’s what the Apple digital assistant strongly hinted at with its responses about the upcoming Apple developer conference.

Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference, or WWDC, is next month and if you ask the voice assistant (I refuse to call an AI a gendered pronoun) what to expect, it hints at a software update and new default voice — and what sounds like a new HomePod speakerThe ApplePost appears to have first discovered Siri giving away conference information when asked.

The world of Voice AI according to Gary Vaynerchuk

Gary Vaynerchuk and his agency Vayner Media are already known for dominating and owning social media. But now they’re turning their attentions to Voice AI. We caught up with Gary to talk about the massive opportunities and challenges that a future of talking to machines presents. Here’s the conversation in full:

Can we establish your views on how revolutionary Voice AI is and is going to be in our day to day lives

It’s going to be one of the core pillars of our interaction. I would say in a decade it’s going to rival  the cell phone as we know it today. Ultimately because of how much time we spend the cell phone will continue to be the primary, but I genuinely believe that voice AI enabled devices and infrastructure is going to become as crucial as the cell phone in the way we interact with technology.  Read more…
