Making playlists is a lot like journaling.

I used to journal religiously — every night for almost ten years, I’d pick up a pen and fill dozens of notebooks with a recap of my day. I burned through almost 20 notebooks and countless rainbow gel pens over the years, meticulously documenting what I did, what I wore, and what annoyed me during my journaling phase. 

But once I got to college, my daily journaling fell apart because maintaining a routine was nearly impossible. Between classes, homework, papers, extracurriculars, and a social life, it was difficult to find time to eat a real meal, let alone recap my day at night.  Read more…

It doesn’t matter if you’re a professional chef or a novice in the kitchen — either way, a proper chef’s knife is an essential. 

Every time I’m invited over for a meal at a friend’s house, I know I will inevitably have to bare witness to meals being prepared with a variety of small and useless knives — no doubt from a knife set. 

Watching someone chop mushrooms with a fish knife, or slice a potato with a bread knife is the visual equivalent of nails on a chalkboard to me. It stirs a physical and painful reaction within and I find myself losing a tiny bit of faith in my pal.  Read more…

I’m a sucker for a good pen. 

I blame it on my father, who is also a sucker for a good pen. But until recently, my father and I couldn’t agree on what constitutes a perfect pen— that is, until we both came across the Sakura Pigma Micron. 

It’s a mouthful of a pen name, I know, but it’s worth remembering. Next time you realize that an attachment to technology has left you missing the feel of an actual writing utensil, reach for a Micron.  Read more…

Ever find yourself feeling unbelievably fucking stressed? Same!

Usually, when my brain begins to feel like a storage unit packed to the brim, I put in my headphones and escape the chaos of the world by listening to music.

But on those rare occasions when most of my favorite music is simply too much to handle — when even the soothing sounds of Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, and Imogen Heap add to my anxiety — I listen to lullabies. Yes, that’s right — I’m talking straight-up songs created for babies. Read more…
