‘Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’ Review: a stunning, mythic adventure of Olympic proportions

The Odyssey is one of the western world’s first classics. The trials of Odysseus —outwitting a Cyclops, navigating a ship through the harrowing straits of Scylla and Charybdis, getting trapped on an island with a powerful witch-goddess who wants to keep him as her lover — have informed Western storytelling for as long as Western storytelling has been a thing. To call something an odyssey is to attach to it a 3,000-year-old literary tradition that promises storytelling on a scale few projects can reach. 

Basically, calling your game Odyssey is ballsy as hell. In order for Ubisoft to pull this off, it had to not only deliver a huge installment in its already stacked franchise, but drape the game in the kind of story and gameplay worthy of Homer himself. Read more…

As a 12-year-old girl, I didn’t quite know what to make of the sensations that overcame me when I played Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

It felt like butterflies, only they fluttered much lower in my stomach, rising like a hot wave all the way up my body. If I’d looked in the mirror, my cheeks would’ve flushed scarlet.

The Prince was my first-ever sexy male video game protagonist crush. But he was far from my last. A desire to bang virtual leading men became a common thread for most of my favorite and formative gaming experiences in girlhood. Read more…

In ‘Assassin’s Creed Odyssey,’ choices really matter

Three hours into playing the first chapter of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, I was faced with a choice. I had been making small choices throughout my playtime — Do I agree to help this nasty old lady recover some stolen wood? Do I tell my friend Phoibe that my pet eagle is a gift from the gods? — but this one felt different. 

A group of priests were about to slaughter the last remaining residents of a plague-ridden village and only I was around to stop them. If I did, the family would survive. If I did not, the rest of the island would be at risk of contagion. The life-or-death dialogue options sat in the bottom right corner of my screen, but I’d be lying if I said it took me long to make the decision: kill them all.  Read more…

Here’s why dialogue options in ‘Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’ actually make sense

Among the many new features promised in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is the ability to make dialogue choices that affect the outcome of quests in the game. It’s an innovation that the franchise has previously avoided because its very premise prohibits dialogue interactivity. 

Assassin’s Creed games are about modern day protagonists using a machine called the Animus to experience the memories of figures in the past exactly as they happened. The assumption is that any player choices made in the process are simply the way it went down however many years ago. 

Adding dialogue and the rumored possibility of multiple endings goes against the established “science” of the Animus, but this step forward was telegraphed in previous games in a way that will change the Assassin’s Creed franchise from Odyssey onward.  Read more…
