Trump struck net neutrality down — and kickstarted the movement that will save it

TwitterFacebook

It’s just over a month since the GOP-controlled Federal Communications Commission voted to gut its net neutrality rules. But if Donald Trump and his hand-picked FCC Chief Ajit Pai thought they’d settled the matter, it’s now becoming clear that what they’ve actually done is the exact opposite.

As Obi-Wan Kenobi might have told them: strike down net neutrality, and it will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.

Right now, the war to save the open internet has all the political energy. It’s being fought on multiple fronts: in the Senate, in courts, in states, in cities, and on late-night TV — not to mention in our homes.  Read more…

T-Mobile CEO is still blathering about 5G in 2020

TwitterFacebook

T-Mobile CEO John Legere has never been known to remain quiet. As New Year’s Eve approaches, it’s been no different.

In an annual memo posted to the T-Mobile blog, Mr. Legere offers up his raw opinions on the passing year and includes several predictions about the future.

The biggest takeaway: Legere is excited about T-Mobile’s 5G internet development. “One of the most under-reported stories for 2017 is the 600 MHz auction,” he says in the post, referring to the FCC’s spectrum auction in April.

“While [Verizon and AT&T] focus on 5G hotspots that won’t work when you leave your home, we will be the only ones on the fast-track toward a real, mobile nationwide 5G network in 2020 – and have already started deploying 5G ready equipment,” he says. Read more…

A very special thank you to Donald Trump for this AT&T/Time Warner fiasco

TwitterFacebook

President Donald Trump has done something that no other president has done before—and many journalists have tried and failed to do.

He turned a boring media merger into the corporate version of a soap opera. He made it interesting.

On Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it will be filing a lawsuit to block AT&T’s $85 billion acquisition of Time Warner. It’s just the most recent in a bizarre series of developments around what is a massively important move in the media world.

Importance, however, doesn’t mean public interest. Apart from the initial announcement, these kinds of deals tend to be pretty boring. Stories about antitrust, for example, aren’t exactly on most people’s must-read list. But they should be, assuming you like to watch HBO, use a smartphone to do just about anything, see movies, or read the news.  Read more…

Donald Trump denies he’s using the AT&T-Time Warner merger to get revenge on CNN

TwitterFacebook

President Donald Trump was always against a merger between AT&T and Time Warner, and he’s always hated CNN. So the appearance that he was using his position to force Time Warner to ditch CNN to close the $85 billion deal made a strange, vindictive kind of sense.

Now, however, Trump is denying any attempts to exact revenge on his cable news nemesis.

Trump said he “didn’t make that decision. That was made by a man who is actually a very respected person, a very, very respected person,” Variety reported. Trump made the comments—likely about Justice Department antitrust chief Makan Delrahim—during his trip through Asia.  Read more…

Major internet outage hits the U.S.

TwitterFacebook

No, it’s not just you.

Large swaths of the United States are currently experiencing internet connection problems with several major ISPs apparently affected. Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T all appear to be having issues, with Comcast blaming the outage on an “external network issue.”

This outage falls just after the one-year anniversary of a major DDOS attack on Dyn that crippled the internet for a day in October of 2016.
