Terrifying video shows people escaping the treacherous California wildfire

A horrifying new video illuminates the dangers of the Camp Fire in Northern California.

The video shared on Facebook by Brynn Parott Chatfield documents their drive through the fire as they attempt to evacuate from their hometown of Paradise. 

Raging fires can be seen burning through the terrain on both sides of the road during Chatfield’s distressing drive, and a passenger in the car can be heard saying a prayer for safety. Visibility is almost zero at times due to the smoke an ash. 

“I feel very vulnerable posting this but I feel I should,” Chatfield wrote on Facebook. “My hometown of Paradise is on fire. My family is evacuated and safe. Not all my friends are safe. It’s very surreal. Things always work out, but the unknown is a little scary.” Read more…

How long does it take for today’s violent wildfires to go out?

When a massive wildfire erupts in the United States today, it can leap over formidable rivers, produce whirling tornados of flame, and cause tens of thousands of people to flee. 

These modern infernos — enhanced by a warming climate that makes for profoundly parched land — are burning over twice as much land than they were in the early 1980s, breaking all-time records. 

After flames spread over tens or hundreds of thousands of acres, it can take quite a bit of time for the fire to finally go out. How long, exactly?

The length of any individual fire can vary quite a bit, Stephen Pyne, a fire historian at Arizona State University, explained in an interview. But more telling numbers can be seen in a decades-long, growing trend. On average, individual fires today burn for a significantly longer time than they used to.    Read more…

San Francisco skies turn orange as wildfires return to Northern California

San Francisco took on a post-apocalyptic shade of orange, after smoke from Northern Californian wildfires reached the city on Sunday.

Just under a year since the deadliest firestorms in state history, intense wildfire has returned to the region, fanned by high winds and hot temperatures.

Smoke and ash from fires burning in the Yolo and Lake counties filled the sky about 75 miles south in the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday morning, giving the city a foreboding orange filter.
