Recent Arctic warming and ice melt are ‘unprecedented’ in human history

Each year for the past 12 years, an international team of scientists have issued a “report card” on the Arctic climate system. The report amounts to a physical exam of the vast, rapidly changing region, including details on everything from surface ai…

The polar bear in this video is dying from starvation. Fortunately, most aren’t…yet

TwitterFacebook

After landing on Baffin Island, Canada, wildlife photographer and environmental activist Paul Nicklen captured video of a frail polar bear — dying and foaming from the mouth — as the weak animal collapsed to the ground. The bear will soon be dead — if it isn’t already.

On Dec. 5, Nicklen posted the grim video to his Instagram account, and since then, it’s been stirring  emotions around the web. Polar bears are, for better or worse, a symbolic species when it comes to global warming, and many are seeing this video as a new warning sign.

Fortunately, however, the condition of this bear is not representative of most polar bear populations — at least not yet.  Read more…

Thursday is one of the most dangerous wildfire days in recent Southern California history

TwitterFacebook

Thursday looks to be a pivotal, frightening day in Southern California’s battle against a wildfire siege that began early this week and has since spread out of control. At least three large fires are currently burning in and around Los Angeles, including one — the Thomas Fire — which has already burned at least 90,000 acres near Ventura.

Early Thursday morning, authorities closed the 101 Freeway in both directions due to strong winds pushing fire close to the road, cutting off movement between Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Evacuation orders have gone out for idyllic communities in the Ojai Valley, as well as parts of Santa Barbara, as flames move toward the coast, according to the LA Times. More evacuations are likely on Thursday. Read more…

Confidence grows that extreme weather pattern will soon envelop Northern Hemisphere

TwitterFacebook

The stage is set for a dramatic change in the weather pattern across the Northern Hemisphere during the next seven to 10 days.

That change will likely bring a brutal Arctic blast across the Midwest and eastern U.S., put Western Europe into the deep freeze, and maintain an area of extreme cold in eastern Asia.

The new weather pattern could give rise to snowstorms along the East Coast of the U.S., though it’s too early to tell whether that will happen, forecasters say. What is clear is that winter is coming — ASAP.

How to spend your Black Friday money on stuff that actually matters

TwitterFacebook

It’s Black Friday — and you know what that means!

We’re all part of a corporate machine that makes us rip each other’s hair out at 6 a.m. for the last $20 spiralizer at Target.

Let’s be real: Black Friday is a thoroughly dehumanizing experience. So, if you want off the free market ride of American thoughtlessness, why not protest by spending your money on stuff that actually benefits the human race instead?

Here are a few alternatives to the usual Black Friday chaos: Read more…

Greenhouse gas emissions just went the wrong way, again

TwitterFacebook

After years of promise, we’re going backwards on greenhouse gases.

Global carbon dioxide emissions are expected to rise by 2 percent in 2017, following a flat line between 2014 and 2016.

These results come from researchers at the Global Carbon Project, showing an unexpected increase in emissions from the world’s top carbon emitter, China. It seems complacency from governments is a lot to blame, in missing our climate goals.

“The slowdown in emissions growth from 2014 to 2016 was always a delicate balance, and the likely 2 percent increase in 2017 clearly demonstrates that we can’t take the recent slowdown for granted,” Robbie Andrew, the report’s co-author, said in a statement. Read more…
