Google Assistant iOS update lets you say ’Hey Siri, OK Google’

Apple probably didn’t intend to let competitors take advantage of Siri Shortcuts this way, but you can now launch Google Assistant on your iPhone by saying “Hey Siri, OK Google .” But don’t expect a flawless experience — it takes multiple steps. After updating the Google Assistant app on iOS, you need to open the […]

OK Google arrives almost natively on iOS through Siri Shortcuts

TwitterFacebook

Google‘s latest Assistant update on iOS is packing quite the integration.

The app now supports Siri Shortcuts, which means, with that in tow, you can now say “Hey Siri, OK Google” to beckon Google’s assistant. Users who have the Google Assistant installed will find an update waiting in the App Store, and new users can download it here.

It’s not quite as easy as using the Google Assistant on an Android device like the Pixel 3. On that phone, all you need to do is say “OK Google,” followed by any command you’d like. On iOS, you still need to go through Siri to use the Google Assistant. Read more…

Facebook Portal needs more. At least it just added YouTube

To offset the creepiness of having Facebook’s camera and microphone in your house, its new Portal video chat gadget needs best-in-class software.  Its hardware is remarkably well done, plus Messenger and the photo frame feature work great. But its third-party app platform was pretty skimpy when the device launched this week. Facebook is increasingly relying […]

Google Home Hub

The Good

Smartly pulls pictures from Google Photos • Slick • compact design • Decent sound • Works as well as any Google Home

As a “smart display” speaker, the Google Home Hub is essentially a Google Home Mini mashed together with a 7-inch touchscreen.

It does all of the smart speaker stuff you expect from a Google Assistant-powered connected home device with voice (play music, control your smart home devices, tell you the news and weather, etc.) with the added bonus of having a screen to display information like maps and lyrics just like Lenovo’s Smart Display. Google updates its Assistant on smart displays and phones

Earlier this week at its annual hardware event, Google announced a number of new features for its Assistant coming to the new Pixel 3 phones and Google’s own Home Hub smart display. As it turns out, though, Google didn’t pull back the curtain on everything new with the Assistant, so today, it’s announcing a number […]

The Google Home Hub might be the best digital picture frame ever made

TwitterFacebook

The Google Home Hub is aptly named.

It’s certainly not the first product to lay claim to the term “hub” but it might be the first product to embody the word so fully. It’s not centered around a single use case — like, say, the Facebook Portal is built around video chat — but instead brings together the functionalities of several different products: smart speaker, tablet, digital photo frame, and smart home controller.

The Home Hub is technically in the category of “smart display,” but that doesn’t capture what it does any better than “smart speaker” describes an Amazon Echo. The Hub is more of an “ambient computing enabler,” with some interesting extras that the display bestows. Read more…

Google Home Hub up close and hands on

While the rumors and leaks didn’t leave much to the imagination ahead of today’s event, I will admit to being a bit surprised by the shape Google’s Home Hub actually took. The renders didn’t do justice to the actual product. For starters, the seven inch screen splits the difference between the Echo Show and Spot […]
