Gmail for iOS finally gets customizable swipe actions

TwitterFacebook

Google is making yet another prominent change to Gmail — one that will make it easier to get work done in a hurry.

The search giant announced on Thursday that its Gmail for iOS app will be updated to add several new customizable swipe actions: archive, trash, mark as read, mark as unread, snooze, and move to [a different folder].

The feature is basically an extension of what’s been available for Android since June 2018. Swipe actions, of course, have been available on iOS for a long time, but haven’t been customizable until today. Google says the feature will rollout to all iOS users over the next 15 days — so don’t stress if you don’t see the new feature right away. Read more…

Apple iPad mini (2019) review: Reliable, not revolutionary

After three long years, Apple’s smallest tablet, the iPad mini, is back.

But the new iPad mini isn’t completely new the way the iPad Pros are. Like someone returning from years spent abroad, the new iPad mini is still mostly the same tablet as the iPad mini 4 released in 2015 — it looks identical (bezels and all) and works with all previous accessories — but its skills have leveled up.

Powered by the A12 Bionic chip found in the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, the new iPad mini has the performance to go the distance. Not just for today, but for years to come. Moreover, Apple Pencil support evolves the new iPad mini beyond being a tablet for consuming content and into one for creating it. Read more…

Apple announces new AirPods with longer talk time, hands-free Siri, and wireless charging case

New AirPods are here at last.

On Wednesday, Apple announced its second-generation AirPods. The new wireless earbuds look identical to the old model, but come with a new H1 chip to achieve up to 50 percent longer talk time on a given charge, and enable hands-free “Hey Siri” voice controls.

The new AirPods cost the same as the old model, too: $159 with a regular “standard” charging case. They’re also available with a Wireless Charging Case for $199. The wireless charging case can also be picked up separately for $79 — good for if you want to add wireless charging later. Read more…

How to enable ‘dark mode’ in 10 popular mobile apps

TwitterFacebook

In the past year or so, several apps (and even entire operating systems, like macOS Mojave) have gotten a feature typically called “dark mode,” which is essentially a new color scheme with light text on a dark background.

I’m a big fan of the dark mode. Not only does it save battery — it requires more energy to light up a laptop or a phone screen with a slab of bright white than a dark grey or black — but it also makes everything look cool.

We’re still waiting for some major platforms to get a dark mode — Android is nearly there, for example — but you can already get it on a number of popular mobile apps, including YouTube, Facebook Messenger, Twitter and more.  Read more…
