High-tech paint could cool cities around the world

TwitterFacebook

Cities like Los Angeles, New York, London, Madrid, and Paris have all acknowledged the bubble-like hotter temperatures within their cities, known widely as the Urban Heat Island effect.

Though some cities have tried a couple of different ways to combat the heat — like Madrid’s car-less day or New York’s movement to paint rooftops white — the higher temperatures still remain.

Now a team of researchers at Columbia University thinks they’ve found a new solution in the form of a high-tech paint.

The scientists created a substance that works like a paint but is actually a polymer coating that reflects both sunlight and radiating heat into the atmosphere. The polymer should help cool not only buildings coated with it but surrounding areas as well, according to a study published in the journal ScienceRead more…

How to use AC without breaking the bank (and ruining the Earth) this summer

TwitterFacebook

The world is facing an environmental paradox.

It’s really, really hot outside. Temperatures in Paris this summer have climbed to nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit. A city in Japan just recorded its first 106 degree day. Multiple cities in California are reaching the 110s and above.

And this extreme heat, which is intensified by human-caused global warming, is driving those with air conditioning to push their machines to the limit.

However, since air conditioners require electricity, the increase in use is sending power plants into overdrive — creating more pollution and further contributing to global warming.  Read more…

Do yourself a favor and get an AC unit *before* the next heat wave — these ones are on sale

TwitterFacebook

Unless you’re lucky enough to live somewhere with central AC, thinking ahead about a window air conditioner needs to be on your to-do list. Like now. You cannot wait for the next heatwave to hit to buy yourself an air conditioner. You will be so miserable. We know. We’ve been there.

Thankfully, Walmart is lending a hand by putting numerous air conditioners on sale this week. Here are some of the *hottest* deals on the best cooling units:

LG Window Mounted Air Conditioner — $186.14

This powerful 8,000 BTU window unit from LG is on sale for under $200 (that’s more than $50 off its regular price) and is one of Amazon’s top-rated air conditioners. Best for rooms 340 square feet or smaller, the unit’s 8,000 BTUs allow it to cool a hot, sticky room in a flash. You’ll also be happy to hear that the unit was a 2016 Energy Star winner (not an easy qualification to make) and received a notably high 12.1 energy efficiency rating. It’s equipped with fan and cooling speeds, 24-hour timers, and also comes with a remote control for top laziness levels. Read more…

We are creating our own extreme weather events, with dire results

TwitterFacebook

The next time someone tells you that we can’t tie an individual weather event to climate change, you should tell them that’s partly to mostly bullshit. Not only can we say a whole lot about an event’s ties to climate change, but some events could not have occurred without global warming’s assistance.

Let this sink in for a second.

Global warming is bringing us newly possible extremes, from the 2016 global average surface temperature milestone (it was number one, baby), to a stifling heat wave in Southeast Asia that set numerous all-time high temperature records.
