The world’s biggest garbage patch is growing. How can we clean it up?

TwitterFacebook

The ocean is full of trash.

Whether it’s on the coast, near the coast, in the open ocean, or on the seafloor, evidence of humanity’s impact on the environment is widespread and abundant.

Each year, 160 billion pounds of trash is dumped into the oceans. And then it gets trapped.

These plastics are continuously swept up into rotating currents into what scientists call convergent or accumulation zones where they settle into gyres or “garbage patches” and wreak havoc on ecosystems in every ocean in the world — sometimes in multiple places.  Read more…

The rogue emitters of an ozone-killing chemical have been exposed. How can they be stopped?

TwitterFacebook

A crooked industry in China has been releasing ozone-depleting chemicals into Earth’s atmosphere for years. Now, many of the culprits have been exposed.

CFC-11, an illegal chemical used to make foam insulation used in homes and buildings, has been banned globally for decades. But scientists spotted an uptick in the chemical’s abundance in the air since 2012, meaning its overall decline has slowed. Researchers concluded in May that there must be a new source of these pollutants.

Exactly who was annually spewing some 14,000 thousand tons of a chemical that erodes the ozone layer — which keeps life on Earth from getting irradiated by the sun — wasn’t known.  Read more…

In the fight against climate change Lyft co-founders John Zimmer and Logan Green explained this week that the San Francisco company was purchasing carbon offsets, making Lyft “one of the top voluntary purchasers of carbon offsets in the world.”

Instead of eliminating emissions from its vehicles, Lyft is participating in a program funding projects that reduce carbon emissionsCarbon Footprint, which works with businesses to manage their environmental impact, describes carbon offsetting as “a way to reduce the emissions that you can’t.” Read more…
