Apple’s TrueDepth camera will be used to send face data to third parties

TwitterFacebook

The iPhone X is officially here, and with it comes a bevy of new bells and whistles that Apple promises justify the smartphone’s hefty price tag

Once such feature is the front-facing TrueDepth sensor, which powers both Face ID and gives us the lovely notch. However, according to an Apple contract recently shared with app developers, it also opens up users to a new and not yet fully understood privacy risk.

According to Reuters, which managed to review the terms of a third-party app developer agreement with Apple, the data gleaned by the TrueDepth sensor need not remain on a customer’s phone. Instead, it can be transmitted to non-Apple servers — a revelation that has some privacy and security experts concerned.  Read more…

People think Facebook is listening to them. Here’s how they’re fighting back.

TwitterFacebook

These days, Facebook seems to know more about you than you do. From eerily accurate “people you may know” suggestions to the creepily perfect ads populating your News Feed, the company undeniably has a Big Brother-like finger on the pulse of its 2 billion monthly active users.

But how does it do this? Could it be, perhaps, that when the boy king behind the half-trillion dollar company isn’t defending himself against charges of subverting democracy, he’s directing his algorithmic minions to listen in on your every conversation so as to better target you with shoe adverts?

Absolutely yes — at least, so goes a long-running theory repeatedly denied by Facebook. But maybe, just maybe, Facebook isn’t being totally honest with us? TwitterFacebook

Apple has used image recognition algorithms to search and organize its Photos app since iOS 10 debuted in 2016 — but a viral tweet put the tool in the spotlight after it appeared to be stockpiling photos of women’s bras in a separate storage category within the Photos app.

Before going any further, it’s important to make a few things clear: There isn’t a separate “folder” filled with your intimate pics within the Photos app, and no one else can access your photos without you giving them permission. So the chance of your private photos leaking is exactly the same as it was before.

And what if you already have folders of your intimate photos on your phone, secret or otherwise? More power to you. You do you. Got it? Good.  Read more…

No, iPhones don’t have a special folder for your sexy pics

It’s understandable when things change as fast as they do these days that it takes a bit for our ideas of how things work to catch up to how they actually work. One misunderstanding worth clearing up is the suggestion that Apple (or Google, or whoever) is somewhere maintaining a special folder in which all your naughty pics are kept. You’re right to be suspicious, but that’s… Read More
