Google kills political ads during Canadian election instead of complying with transparency laws

We’re jealous of Canada again, and not just for their healthcare.

Google won’t run political ads during Canada’s 2019 election, according to The Globe and Mail. Google made its decision in response to a new set of election advertising transparency rules, which Google said would be too difficult to comply with.

“We’ve come to the decision that the best way for Google to comply with the Elections Act in the 2019 election cycle is actually to stop accepting elections ads as defined in the legislation,” Colin McKay, Google Canada’s head of public policy and government relations, told the Globe and Mail. “It is painful for us.” Read more…

Google restricts tech support ads, thanks to how bad many of them are

Tech support scams are a problem on the internet, and Google is trying to stop people from getting tangled in them through their ads.

It’s decided to restrict ads by third-party technical support providers, as well as making these businesses verify themselves.

“As the fraudulent activity takes place off our platform, it’s increasingly difficult to separate the bad actors from the legitimate providers,” reads a post by Google’s director of global product policy, David Graff, on Friday.

“That’s why in the coming months, we will roll out a verification program to ensure that only legitimate providers of third-party tech support can use our platform to reach consumers.” Read more…

You’ll soon be able to try on sunglasses and buy them without ever leaving your Facebook app.

The social media company announced Tuesday that it’s beginning to test augmented reality advertisements in the News Feed. 

For the uninitiated, augmented reality (AR) is a technology that overlays digital images onto real world objects. For example, when people play Pokemon Go on their smartphone, the technology that visually superimposes Pokemon on their street corner is considered AR.

Facebook’s new push to be more transparent have already hit a snag. The company recently introduced a new tool that lets users easily see any ads a particular Facebook Page is running, but advertisers have already found a way around it.

The social media giant is in the midst of dealing with a number of crises over privacy, security, and bad faith use of the tools on its platform. To deal with one of the bigger looming problems — bad actors potentially using the social network’s ad network to covertly influence elections just as the Russia-linked Internet Research Agency did in 2016 — Facebook came up with a solution that emphasized transparency.
