Extreme Arctic heat wave in 2016 wouldn’t have happened without climate change

Just days before Christmas in 2016, the North Pole was 50 degrees above its usual winter temperature. The top of the world was just above freezing

Unusually warm air had smothered the Arctic throughout that year, and now a recently published report, led by government scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), found that it’s nearly impossible to explain the intensity of this warmth simply by normal fluctuations in weather.

A heating event like this isn’t natural, they argue — it’s largely human-induced, specifically by the greenhouse gases emitted by human industry and trapped in the atmosphereRead more…

Arctic sea ice hits 2nd-lowest seasonal peak as scientists ring alarm bells

TwitterFacebook

Arctic sea ice expands and contracts throughout the year, reaching a peak extent sometime during March, just as the sun rises above the North Pole.

It shrinks back during the summer, on its way to an annual minimum during the month of September. As the climate warms, however, sea ice has declined, compared to past levels, during all seasons. But in recent years, climate scientists have become more concerned as they’ve seen what’s taking place during the Arctic winter, which had historically seen less of a climate change signal in the ice compared to other seasons

That’s not the case anymore. Scientists announced on Friday that sea ice reached a wintertime peak in 2018 that was only a smidgeon above 2017’s all-time record low.  Read more…

Drastic Arctic warm event stuns scientists, as record-breaking temperatures reach the North Pole

Arctic scientists are poring over data coming in from the vast, normally frozen region, after the North Pole’s version of a heat wave swept across the area for the past week. Not only was the region near the North Pole the warmest it has been during …

Temperature rises above freezing near North Pole, as frigid air slinks toward Europe

The temperature at a weather station at the very top of Greenland, at one of the closest points of any land mass to the North Pole, has risen above the freezing mark of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0 degrees Celsius, during the past two days.

Crucial Arctic monitoring satellites are blinking out just when we need them most

For 18 years, a fully-built, ready-to-launch weather satellite sat inside a Lockheed Martin facility near Moffett Field in Sunnyvale, California. Scientists were waiting for the spacecraft to be called into active duty since it was completed during the Clinton administration.

A different order from Washington arrived instead.

Because of resistance in Congress — particularly from Rep. Michael Rogers of Alabama, who chairs a key House Defense subcommittee — Capitol Hill told the Air Force to take the satellite apart.
