Microsoft Surface Go review: Barely better than a netbook

TwitterFacebook
Microsoft Surface Go
$399 (starting)
The Good

Excellent build quality • Sharp • bright display • Windows Hello support • Built-in microSD card slot

The Bad

Sluggish performance • Janky touchscreen for some apps like Chrome • Keyboard and stylus sold separately • Huge • thick bezels around display

The Bottom Line

Microsoft’s Surface Go is the cheapest way to buy into the Surface ecosystem, but sluggish performance keeps it from competing with Apple’s iPads.

Microsoft’s $399 Surface Go is here to nuke Apple’s iPad

TwitterFacebook

Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on youMicrosoft’s new Surface Go really is a shrunken version of its popular Surface Pro.

The 10-inch Surface Go is Microsoft’s smallest, thinnest, and lightest Surface tablet to date. And with a starting price of $399, the Go is also the cheapest Surface as well.

A Surface RT (remember that disastrous tablet?) the Go is not. This mini Surface runs Windows 10 in its entirety and all x86 apps.

My first thought after a Microsoft executive pulled the Go out of her purse wasn’t, “Oh, that’s really small” but “Why?” Why would anyone need a mini Surface Pro? And it really is a smaller version of the 2-in-1 — hinge, keyboard cover, stylus, and all. Read more…

The company tweeted out the leading question “Where will Surface go next?” along with a image of the full lineup — the Pro, Laptop, Book 2 and swiveling all-in-one Studio. Microsoft leak hints that a rumored dual-screen Surface is pocket-sized

TwitterFacebook

Just don’t call it a Windows Phone.

Rumors of a dual-screen Surface have been kicking around for a little bit, but here’s a surprising new detail: It’s built for your pocket. That’s what it sounds like, anyway. The revelation comes from an internal document obtained by The Verge, though Microsoft hasn’t confirmed it.

“It’s a new pocketable Surface device form factor that brings together innovative new hardware and software experiences to create a truly personal and versatile computing experience,” the document — which is merely quoted, rather than reprinted in its entirety — reads. Read more…

Inside Microsoft’s secret Surface testing labs

I cringed hard as a robot arm dropped a Surface Pro onto the ground from several feet up

I did it again when a hose sprayed water all over another Surface tablet. And then again when another robot repeatedly stabbed a Surface Studio’s screen with a Surface Pen over and over.

I’m not watching a YouTube video of some crazy kid torturing their Microsoft devices just for the views.

These are real stress tests performed at Microsoft’s reliability labs at its Redmond, Washington campus to ensure its products are built to last and can survive even the most unexpected real-world scenarios.

The Labs

Microsoft recently invited me to Building 87, which happens to be the site where Microsoft devices — specifically Surfaces — are put through the wringer Read more…

Microsoft launches Windows 10 on ARM, with HP and ASUS promising 20+ hours of battery life

Windows laptops and tablets have traditionally run on X86 processors from the likes of Intel and AMD. Microsoft experimented with using ARM-based processors when it launched the Surface RT and Windows RT in 2012 — and it cost the company dearly. Fast-forward to today and Microsoft is ready to give ARM on laptops another try. Read More

Hands-on with Microsoft’s high-end Surface Book 2

Microsoft’s Surface Book 2 is the most powerful mobile Surface device yet. It easily blows away the Surface Pro, Surface Laptop and, of course, the old Surface Book. It’s also one of the odder devices in the lineup, though. It’s not just a Surface Pro with a rigid keyboard. It’s a relatively heavy base with a powerful processor and graphics card and a big battery… Read More
