Huawei’s new MateBook X Pro and MateBook 14 are great alternatives to a MacBook Pro

TwitterFacebook

Huawei wants to be known for more than just its excellent Android phones. Last year, the tech titan surprised everyone with the thin and powerful MateBook X Pro — arguably one of the best laptops of the 2018 — as a serious competitor to Apple’s MacBook Pro.

At Mobile World Congress, Huawei announced a revamped version with updated specs including a faster Intel 8th-generation Core i7 processor, more powerful discrete graphics, faster wired and wireless connectivity, and several new ways to wirelessly connect a Huawei phone to boost productivity.

Huawei also took the wraps off a more affordable MateBook 14 with many of the same features. It’s a great time to consider a Windows 10 laptop if you’re not satisfied with the compromises in Apple’s latest MacBook Pros. Read more…

LAS VEGAS—If you have $5,000 you can own a supercharged Windows 10 workstation.

The Cemtrex SmartDesk contains three touch-screen monitors, sensors that can let you control your PC with hand gestures, and a wireless phone charger that sits on the side.

We saw the workstation here at CES. It comes integrated with a keyboard, trackpad, document scanner, speakerS, and a web camera, all in a polished frame that’s accessible whether you’re sitting or standing.

US-based Cemtrex says the 120-pound desk is the most advanced workstation on the market. However, the PC running inside isn’t anything to brag about it. According to the spec sheet, the system uses an 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor, with either a GTX 1050 graphics card or GTX 1060, and 16GB or 32GB of RAM. In other words, nothing really overpowered. Read more…

Dell finally fixes the single worst thing about the XPS 13

TwitterFacebook

Dell’s XPS 13 laptop is beloved by PC users, and for good reason: It’s really thin, really light, and the super thin bezels surrounding the display make MacBooks look ancient by comparison.

But the laptop’s worst feature is easily the placement of the webcam on the bezel below the screen. It’s in a weird spot, right where the camera is always aimed at an unflattering angle, right up your nose.

Now, thankfully, Dell has listened to the complaints and put the camera back where it belongs — above the screen — on the new 2019 XPS 13.

The new Windows 10 laptop made its debut at CES 2019, and it’ll likely be a top contender for best laptop of the new year. Read more…

Windows 10 is now the most popular desktop operating system in the world

TwitterFacebook

Microsoft finished 2018 by hitting another major milestone.

Windows 10, the company’s newest desktop operating system, is now the most popular in the world. It surpassed 9-year-old Windows 7, according to Net Applications via The Verge.

Windows 10 now holds more than 39 percent of the marketshare for desktop operating systems as of December. Windows 7 only makes up less than 37 percent.

The report also claims that more than 700 million devices now run on Windows 10. These devices include PC, Xbox One, tablets, and phones.

Microsoft ended most support for Windows 7 in 2015. Extended support for the OS officially ends in 2020. The company has urged users to upgrade and Windows 7’s market share has experienced a steady decline ever since. Read more…

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx chip for Windows 10 laptops could end Intel’s dominance

TwitterFacebook

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips dominate mobile — you’ll find them in almost every Android phone and tablet — and now they’re ready to invade Intel’s main turf: PCs.

On the third day of its annual Snapdragon Technology Summit, the world’s largest mobile chipmaker unveiled the Snapdragon 8cx system-on-a-chip (SoC). It’s created with a 7-nanometer process, similar to Apple’s A12 and A12X chips, which are in the iPhone XS/XS Max/XR and new iPad Pros.

Qualcomm previously tested the PC waters with the Snapdragon 835 and 850 chips, but now it’s ready for a full assault on Intel’s territory. This could very well be the beginning of the end to Intel’s vice-like grip powering PCs. Read more…
