Twitter’s murky verification process is helping cryptocurrency scams thrive

Twitter verification, or the blue checkmark that appears next to an official account’s name, is seen by most people as a badge of credibility. It’s meant to distinguish real accounts from the fake ones.

But for scammers, the same blue checkmark can be exploited to take money from unwitting users, as BuzzFeed reported last week. 

The BuzzFeed story describes how an account called @Tronfoundation, a company offering the cryptocurrency token $TRX, was impersonated by about a dozen accounts. But the one fake account that really stuck out from the pack was @Tronfoundationl because it somehow acquired a blue verified checkmark — even though the account was fake. Read more…

Far-right personalities around the world are feeling the impact of Twitter’s new verification policy

Twitter has changed its verified profiles policy, saying it will strip the blue checkmark from accounts that don’t follow the new guidelines. 

And its impact is now being felt among far-right personalities in the U.S. and UK. 

Tommy Robinson, prominent British rightwing personality and founder of the English Defence League (EDL), said on Twitter he had his blue badge removed and commented: “& so it begins.”

Twitter pauses verification requests in wake of white supremacy scandal

Hoping to get verified on Twitter? Don’t bother trying right now.

Twitter is pausing all general verification requests, the company announced Thursday. The decision comes days after Twitter verified Jason Kessler, the organizer of the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville that resulted in the death of counterprotester Heather Heyer. 

That move was seen by some as an endorsement of white supremacy. “Twitter is directly enabling white supremacy and white nationalist ideology,” wrote The Root‘s Monique Judge

Twitter has argued that isn’t the case. Verification, similar to the badge on Facebook and Instagram, is intended to show people who’s real versus an unconfirmed account that could be a parody or imposter account.  Read more…
