Vivo NEX with a see-through back is supremely cool

The Vivo NEX is a pretty special phone; it’s all-screen on the front and its selfie camera pops up from the top of the phone only when needed.

But there’s a way to make this phone even cooler — by making its back fully transparent.

It’s a fiddly business that requires a heat gun as well as lots of careful prying and prodding, but JerryRigEverything has done it, and recorded the entire process on video.

Removing the phone’s back panel and scratching its paint to make it transparent was easy enough. Where it gets tricky, though, is cutting up a piece of the metal-and-plastic cover that obscures the mechanism even when the back panel is removed.  Read more…

The Good

Big • beautiful • notch-less screen • Lots of innovation • Great rear camera

The Bad

Fingerprint sensor often doesn’t work • Selfie camera is so-so

Vivo NEX is what you wanted the iPhone X to be

In February, Chinese smartphone maker Vivo invited me into its Mobile World Congress booth in Barcelona to show me the Apex, a concept phone that was essentially all screen on the front. With its slide-out selfie camera and in-display fingerprint sensor, it was the sort of thing you don’t expect to see on the shelves for years.

And yet, here it is. On Tuesday, at an event in Shanghai, China, Vivo launched the NEX — essentially a polished, market-ready version of the Apex, with tons of rad new tech that make a notch-less, nearly bezel-less screen possible.
