Vivo’s Apex 2019 is all screen and no holes

TwitterFacebook

In February 2018, China’s Vivo was one of the first companies to show a phone that’s literally all screen on the front — no notches for the selfie camera, thin bezels all around.

Now, the company has launched a successor to that phone, called the Vivo Apex 2019 — and it takes the same concept to its logical conclusion.

Vivo actually soft-launched the Apex 2019 in January, but the company has now brought the actual device to an event in Hong Kong (via The Verge)

Vivo’s Apex 2019 has no physical buttons, which have been replaced by pressure sensors which give haptic feedback when you touch them. The standard USB port has been removed and replaced with a Magport: a magnetic connector that clings to the back of the phone to charge it. There’s no SIM card slot — you have to use an eSIM instead. The phone’s screen doesn’t have a notch, and it has a new kind of fingerprint scanner, which lets you unlock the phone by placing a finger anywhere on the screen instead of a designated spot. There’s no speaker grille, either: The sound is delivered by vibrating the screen, a technology used in the original Apex phone as well. Read more…

Sub-brands are the new weapon in China’s smartphone war

One of China’s top smartphone brands Vivo appears to have joined its fellows Oppo, Huawei and Xiaomi in setting up a new sub-brand as a softening market and heightened competition at home drive players to venture upon their original reach. A new smartphone brand called iQoo made its debut on Weibo, China’s answer to Twitter, on […]

Apple’s 5G iPhone conundrum

Wednesday is Apple’s big product release day, where analysts expect the company to release the next edition of the iPhone. While the usual upgrades to the screen, CPU, and storage are expected as always, one major lingering question is how the company is going to handle 5G, the next-generation telecommunications standard. The conventional wisdom among […]

Vivo NEX with a see-through back is supremely cool

TwitterFacebook

The Vivo NEX is a pretty special phone; it’s all-screen on the front and its selfie camera pops up from the top of the phone only when needed.

But there’s a way to make this phone even cooler — by making its back fully transparent.

It’s a fiddly business that requires a heat gun as well as lots of careful prying and prodding, but JerryRigEverything has done it, and recorded the entire process on video.

Removing the phone’s back panel and scratching its paint to make it transparent was easy enough. Where it gets tricky, though, is cutting up a piece of the metal-and-plastic cover that obscures the mechanism even when the back panel is removed.  Read more…

Vivo NEX review: This is what happens when you’d do anything to kill the notch

TwitterFacebook
Vivo NEX S
$751
The Good

Big • beautiful • notch-less screen • Lots of innovation • Great rear camera

The Bad

Fingerprint sensor often doesn’t work • Selfie camera is so-so

The Bottom Line

The Vivo NEX is undoubtedly a cool device, but you should probably wait for a (less buggy) successor.

Vivo NEX is what you wanted the iPhone X to be

TwitterFacebook

In February, Chinese smartphone maker Vivo invited me into its Mobile World Congress booth in Barcelona to show me the Apex, a concept phone that was essentially all screen on the front. With its slide-out selfie camera and in-display fingerprint sensor, it was the sort of thing you don’t expect to see on the shelves for years.

And yet, here it is. On Tuesday, at an event in Shanghai, China, Vivo launched the NEX — essentially a polished, market-ready version of the Apex, with tons of rad new tech that make a notch-less, nearly bezel-less screen possible.

The first phone with a true edge-to-edge display is coming in June

TwitterFacebook

Back in February Vivo unveiled the Apex — a smartphone with bezels so slim that it’s the first phone we’ve seen that is arguably a true edge-to-edge display. Now, five months later, that phone looks like it’s becoming a reality: Vivo just released a teaser for an unveiling event in Shanghai on June 12.

The coy video holds back on the details about the forthcoming phone, though we get a glimpse at the gorgeous large display with no bezels. We also see the front-facing camera that pops out from the top — the signature feature that eliminates the need for any “notch.”

Review: Vivo X21 is the future, but it came too soon

TwitterFacebook
Vivo X21
$567
The Good

First widely available phone with an under-the-display fingerprint sensor • Good camera performance

The Bad

Fingerprint sensor takes getting used to • Pricier than direct competitors

The Bottom Line

The Vivo X21 is the first of its kind, and most of the time its bleeding edge tech works well. However, it’s pricy for what it offers, especially once the wow factor wears off.

Report: Chinese smartphone shipments drop 21% to reach lowest level since 2013

Analysts have long-warned of a growth crunch in China’s smartphone space, and it’s looking like that’s very much the case right now. China’s smartphone growth has been the feel-good story for domestic OEMs who have clocked impressive figures as the billion-plus population has rushed online via mobile devices. However, the market reached saturation point in […]
