‘Kingdom Hearts III’ builds minigames out of an ’80s gaming phenomenon

This is so cool.

A new Kingdom Hearts III trailer takes a look and what appears to be a collection of minigames appearing in the larger game. They all riff on the old handheld LCD games of the ’80s and early ’90s. Stuff like Nintendo’s Game & Watch and Tiger Electronics’ long string of licensed releases.

These were the kind of simple video games people would play on the go before the days of smartphones or even Game Boys. It’s not clear why you’re playing them in Kingdom Hearts III, but they look delightful.

For those who don’t know, the Kingdom Hearts series mashes Disney worlds and characters together with an RPG world built by Square Enix (and featuring elements of Final Fantasy and The World Ends With You)Kingdom Hearts III, the first main entry in the series since 2006, is expected to arrive sometime later this year.
