When the peak of summer arrives in Alaska and the radiant midnight sun hangs in the northern sky, tens of millions of salmon make their move. They race up rivers, leap over waterfalls, and clog narrow streams with their hefty, five-pound bodies. It is then that Alaska’s Bristol Bay — home to the largest run of sockeye salmon on the planet — comes to life. Wolverines, foxes, lynx, and bald eagles descend upon this untrammeled realm. And the most dominant creature of the land, the brown bear, saunters down to these rivers. One bright summer morning four years ago, two park rangers set off hiking up a dormant Alaskan volcano. 

But like a light switch, the weather changed.

Vicious winds brought frigid, sideways rain. It didn’t relent. Usually dry ditches transformed into swiftly flowing creeks, and the rivers grew higher. 

The rangers found rocky shelter to wait out the storm, but one foolish ranger — ill-equipped with cotton socks that day — experienced both an immeasurably miserable and nearly-harmful journey back to safety: Wet cotton socks don’t insulate.

After six days of strong competition, the Fat Bear Week finals have arrived.

Katmai National Park, where these wild bears live and hibernate, amusingly calls the pinnacle of the week-long contest “Fat Bear Tuesday.” 

This year’s Tuesday match features two profoundly fat bears, both of whom clearly exploited a Brooks River that teemed with 2018’s exceptional and long run of 4,500-calorie salmon.  Read more…

Fat bear aficionados, it’s time to meet your final four.

In an upset that won’t soon be forgotten, Bear 32 Chunk took down the most dominant bear at the river this summer, Bear 856. Bear 856’s fat just couldn’t cut it. 

In Saturday’s second matchup, Bear 747 — a beloved fat bear by watchers of the river’s drama — also advanced to the final four beating out the smaller, Bear 719. Read more…
