All the things you might have missed in Donald Glover’s ‘This Is America’ video

Donald Glover premiered two new songs on Saturday Night Live this weekend, and while he was on stage, he also dropped a music video for one of the singles — “This Is America.”

The video, choreographed by Sherrie Silver and directed by Hiro Murai, has a lot jammed into it for a four-minute video. It’s an expertly packaged analysis on what’s happening here in the United States. Here’s what you might have missed: 

1. Trayvon Martin’s dad might have made a cameo

This one is a little hard to confirm, but according to Twitter users with great eyes, the man playing guitar in the beginning of the video might be Tracy Martin — father of Trayvon Martin, the young boy who was killed by George Zimmerman in 2012.  Read more…

Donald Glover tackles gun violence in powerful video for ‘This Is America,’ his new single

Donald Glover, in addition to delivering a hilarious round of sketches on Saturday Night Live, whipped out his Childish Gambino hat and performed on the storied show. 

But while all eyes were on the Studio 8H stage, Gambino simultaneously dropped a new single and music video called “This Is America.” Since its release, the video has racked up over 2 million views as of publishing this, and it’s easy to understand why.

Gambino packs in a whole lot into in “This Is America.” It’s a major departure from the funk he’s given us previously but it works wonderfully in the context of conversations this track sparks. In addition to the musical references (there are adlibs from Billboard-charting artists like 21 Savage, Young Thug, Big Sean, Blocboy JB, and more), the visuals are a nuanced examination of life in America — particularly as a black person in this country.  Read more…

Donald Glover/Childish Gambino to pull double duty on ‘SNL’

Donald Glover will be pulling a rare double-duty on Saturday Night Live in May.

Saturday Night Live announced Sunday morning that renaissance man Donald Glover will be hosting the show on May 5 with musical guest Childish Gambino, a.k.a. the rapper alter ego of Donald Glover.

May 5 will be Glover’s first time hosting SNL and also his first time as the show’s musical guest. Only a handful of people have held down both roles in SNL history; Glover will be joining the ranks of Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears, to name a few. Read more…
