Helen Mirren at RSA security conference: You’re heroes who ‘patrol a vast untamed wasteland’

TwitterFacebook

The annual RSA cybersecurity conference is officially underway in San Francisco, and things have taken a turn for the weird.

In a packed convention hall in the city’s downtown Moscone Center, thousands of attendees gathered shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday for the opening keynote of an industry conference that draws security professionals from around the globe. And, because of course, Dame Helen Mirren was there to welcome them — and aggressively stroke their egos in the process.

“Many of you patrol a vast untamed wasteland on your own,” Dame Mirren cooed to what appeared to be a mostly male crowd. “You see the hope that you radiate has been felt worldwide by many souls you may never meet. Your sense of duty and goodness, like an eternal beacon, helps others find their way through the darkness.” Read more…

Singapore Airlines passengers have a camera pointed at them

TwitterFacebook

If you’re flying with Singapore Airlines, don’t be surprised if it looks as though there’s a camera staring at you from the back of the seat in front. There is a camera present, but the airline insists it isn’t being used.

The discovery of the tiny camera, which we’re more used to seeing positioned above laptop displays, was made by passenger Vitaly Kamluk. He tweeted asking for expert opinion as to whether this was indeed a camera.

Just found this interesting sensor looking at me from the seat back on board of Singapore Airlines. Any expert opinion of whether this a camera? Perhaps @SingaporeAir could clarify how it is used? pic.twitter.com/vy0usqruZG

Google accidentally didn’t tell anyone about the microphone in its Nest Secure device

TwitterFacebook

It’s not every day you get a straight up “our bad” from a tech giant.

Google announced in early February that its Nest Guard device — the hub for managing a Nest Secure home security system— would get an over-the-air update to make it compatible with Google Assistant, essentially giving it the abilities of a smart speaker.

Neat? Handy? Sure. But how this was even possible could be a cause for concern.

It turns out that Google built a microphone into the Nest Guard without disclosing this spec to users. According to a report from Business Insider, the lack of communication about the microphone was, apparently, an oversight.  Read more…
