Volvo Polestar 2 is the first car to include Google’s native dashboard

TwitterFacebook

On Wednesday, Volvo’s performance brand debuted its first all-electric car, the Polestar 2. But the new  Tesla Model 3 competitor is causing a stir in the auto industry not only for its performance, but for being the first car to feature Google’s native version of Android built for cars.

The first Polestar vehicle (aptly named Polestar 1) was a plug-in hybrid two-door coupe that came out in 2017. The brand’s second car is a bit more practical with four doors and longer battery range, mimicking the price, design, and capability of the Model 3  — Tesla’s more affordable sedan that starts at $42,000. Lime scooter bug sees riders injured thanks to ‘sudden excessive braking’

TwitterFacebook

If there’s one thing you don’t want while you’re cruising downhill on a scooter, it’s sudden braking.

Lime has rolled out firmware updates after the detection of a bug within its fleet of electric scooters, which could “under rare circumstances could cause sudden excessive braking.”

According to a company blog post, Lime commissioned “extensive analysis” of the problem by its internal team and other experts, and found that although the issue was rare, it was indeed happening.

“We diagnosed the issue in a laboratory environment and determined that in very rare cases — usually riding downhill at top speed while hitting a pothole or other obstacle — excessive brake force on the front wheel can occur, resulting in a scooter stopping unexpectedly,” read its statement, published Feb. 23.  Read more…

Porsche’s luxury Macan SUV gets an electric makeover

Porsche is adding more electric vehicles to its luxury lineup, this time transforming its Macan SUV into a Tesla Model X-style vehicle.

The smaller SUV joins the electric sports car, the Taycan, expected to launch by the end of this year. Porsche announced its first electric car last year as the $85,000 Mission E, but has since rebranded. The Taycan Cross Turismo will follow.

This is all part of Porsche’s electric plans — by 2025 it aims for half of all Porsches to be electric. Within the next 10 years Porsche says it will make plug-in hybrid vehicles, as well.  Read more…

Why Tesla’s electric cars can burn hours after a crash

TwitterFacebook

In a car crash, things can get fiery quickly — it doesn’t matter if you’re driving a Tesla Model X electric car or a traditional gas-fueled Honda Civic.

That’s what happened in a fatal crash in Florida over the weekend. A man speeding in a Tesla Model S lost control and drove into the median and some trees. His car burst into flames, and he died.

In an email statement, a Tesla spokesperson said, “We are deeply saddened by this accident and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy. We have reached out to the local authorities to offer our cooperation. We understand that speed is being investigated as a factor in this crash, and know that high speed collisions can result in a fire in any type of car, not just electric vehicles.” Read more…
