Huawei teases foldable phone in new invite

TwitterFacebook

Huawei’s foldable phone is coming in about three weeks.

This is according to a new teaser for a company event on Feb 24, ahead of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.

The image and the tweet don’t reveal much, but the image clearly shows a foldable device of some sort. Given previous indications that Huawei plans to launch a foldable phone (though the plan to launch before Samsung likely won’t materialize), the hint is clear enough.

Samsung to launch Galaxy S10 and foldable phone at February event, report claims

TwitterFacebook

Just days after a Samsung exec confirmed the company’s foldable phone is coming in the first half of 2018 comes a report that claims it’ll actually happen very early within that time frame.

According to the Wall Street Journal, which quotes people familiar with the matter, Samsung plans to launch its Galaxy S10 flagship together with the foldable phone (possibly called the Galaxy F or Galaxy Fold), during a February 20 event in San Francisco and London.

The timeline makes sense — sort of. Samsung typically launches a flagship Galaxy S device at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which kicks off Feb. 25 this year. Launching a new flagship just 5 days ahead of MWC is sort of odd (why not just add a Barcelona event as well?), but Samsung historically did something similar before; for example, Samsung Galaxy S8 was launched a month after MWC 2017.  Read more…

Samsung’s foldable phone to arrive in the first half of 2019

TwitterFacebook

Samsung’s foldable phone myth is (painfully) slowly turning into an actual product.

After years of rumors, the company showed a prototype of the device in November, and now at CES, a company exec revealed a very rough launch date — the first half of this year.

Digital Trends got a hold of Samsung’s director of Product Strategy and Marketing, Suzanne de Silva, at CES, and she told them the foldable phone is coming in the first half of 2019.

Previously, Samsung’s best estimate was sometime in 2019, which, together with a rumor that the company hasn’t even decided on a final design for the foldable phone, did not instill optimism.  Read more…

Xiaomi may be working on a tri-folding tablet-phone hybrid

TwitterFacebook

If you can fold it once, why not fold it twice?

Foldable devices will apparently be all the rage in 2019, and, according to a video posted by leaker of all things mobile, @evleaks, Xiaomi is joining the fray in a big way.

Can’t speak to the authenticity of this video or device, but it’s allegedly made by Xiaomi, I’m told. Hot new phone, or gadget porn deepfake? pic.twitter.com/qwFogWiE2F

— Evan Blass (@evleaks) January 3, 2019

The video comes with zero additional details, and it appears that even Blass isn’t sure the device was made by Xiaomi, but boy does it looks cool!

Samsung says we’ll get new foldable phones every year

TwitterFacebook

Foldable phones aren’t going away anytime soon.

Samsung’s head of mobile, D.J. Koh, said that the company plans to release a new foldable phone every year in select markets, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News.

The report claims that the first foldable Samsung smartphone will be released in the first half of next year. Notably, it will not be part of the company’s popular Galaxy S or Galaxy Note series. Instead, the company will launch a brand new series for the foldable phones called the “Galaxy F” series.

Samsung’s foldable phones were long-rumored to be one of the company’s greatest innovations in the increasingly saturated smartphone market. The phone is rumored to be vastly different — and certainly more intentionally bendable — than anything available from chief rivals Apple and LG. Read more…

Samsung still has no idea what to do with that foldable phone, report says

TwitterFacebook

A new report from Bloomberg, published Thursday, brings a ton of details about Samsung’s smartphone plans, including some new info about the upcoming Galaxy S10 flagship.

But before we go into that, let’s talk a bit about Samsung’s foldable phone, which has been in development for years and might finally be announced during the Samsung Developer Conference in November.

According to Bloomberg’s report, Samsung still isn’t sure the foldable phone — codenamed “Winner,” of all things — should fold horizontally or vertically.

Not a rumor: Samsung has almost completed its foldable phone

TwitterFacebook

Waiting for Samsung’s foldable phone has been like waiting for the Yeti: You see a blurry, probably fake photo here and there, but the real thing never seems to show up.

But this year might be different.

This is according to Samsung’s CEO of mobile DJ Koh, who told CNBC that it’s “time to deliver” this long-awaited device.

That phrase is intentionally vague — CNBC says Koh declined to say whether the foldable phone will be launched this year, but he did say Samsung has “nearly concluded” the “complicated” development process for the phone.  Read more…

Samsung’s cancelled foldable phone looks exactly like you thought it would

TwitterFacebook

Samsung has been working on a foldable phone for seemingly forever, but the release of this fabled device keeps getting delayed (presumably because the entire concept doesn’t make a lot of sense).

Now, a new leak claims to show a cancelled, two-screened phone from Samsung, and it looks surprisingly boring.

The concept, leaked by Twitter user @MMDDJ_ and noticed by SlashLeaks, is basically a fat Samsung phone with a second screen on a hinge. Apparently, it was called Project V (model number SM-G929F) — we’ve heard of a similarly named foldable Samsung phone in 2016, so that’s presumably when this thing was designed.  Read more…
