The iPhone XS is barely out, and someone already dropped it onto concrete

Apple’s iPhone XS and XS Max are finally getting into the hands of the consumers, and what’s the first thing they do? They drop the phones onto concrete, of course.

Well, maybe not all consumers. YouTube channel TechSmartt performed the first drop test of Apple’s new iPhones on Thursday, which is especially interesting given that Apple said the iPhone XS and XS Max have “the most durable glass in the world.”

TechSmartt dropped the new XS and XS Max — as well as last year’s iPhone X — from three (loosely defined) heights: pocket height, head height, and roughly 10 feet. Obviously, this isn’t the most scientific of approaches, but still interesting enough, and quite daring: Can you really expect any phone to escape a 10-foot drop onto concrete unscathed?  Read more…

The iPhone XR has a 10.7 percent bigger battery than the iPhone XS, China filings show

For some reason, Apple never lists RAM memory capacity or battery size for its devices. This is why the specs sheets for the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR weren’t really complete even after the phones’ unveiling last week.

A few minutes later than announced — should’ve been 3 a.m. ET but it was actually at 3:10 am. AT — Apple has opened up pre-orders for the iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max and Apple Watch Seres 4 on its website.

If you’ve followed Wednesday’s announcements, there’s nothing new here: The iPhone XS starts at $999, while the iPhone XS Max starts at $1,099.

The Apple Watch Series 4 costs $399 sans LTE, and $499 with LTE.

All three devices will start shipping Sept. 21.

Note that in past years, new colors went out of stock faster than others; expect the gold iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max to disappear quickly.  Read more…

If you must upgrade from the iPhone X, the iPhone XR is the most interesting option

Apple’s event on Wednesday brought us three new flagship smartphones. When you consider that the phones come in three variants each, potential buyers now have a wide and nuanced (you could also call it confusing) array of options.

But the obvious upgrade path — from the iPhone X to its direct successor, the iPhone XS, doesn’t make a lot of sense. You should look into some of the other options, though.

I know: Someone says this every other year. Apple has a tick-tock schedule of phone updates; one year you get a different look and shiny new features, and one year —- the “S” year, which is this year — you get an iterative upgrade of last year’s devices.  Read more…
