Warning: Some super light spoilers lie ahead.

As any decent witch will tell you, spooky and sexy are not mutually exclusive.

The horror industry is a beast with as many subgenres as Medusa has heads. You can go gothic or slasher, found footage or torture porn, classic monster or heady nightmare—the possibilities are practically endless.

But some horror fans’ needs are a little trickier to hunt down than others’. For example, what if you want to watch something that’s just a little… sexy? No, not full-blown horror erotica. Just a regular scary flick with some racy elements. Where do you find something so specific? Read more…

Which of ‘Maniac’s’ pill hallucination stories was the best?

TwitterFacebook

A lot went down on Maniac. What appeared to be a story about two people in a clinical trial that is meant to cure humanity of its mental ills turned out to be a wild ride through the human psyche, complete with seemingly unrelated vignettes that took place across timelines and realities.

These jaunts into Owen and Annie’s minds were some of the highlights of the show, but which of then was the best standalone story?

See the rankings below, in descending order.

5. The Mob Prince Blues

Maniac

The story of Owen the mob prince is more muted than the other vignettes with one big exception: it’s violent as hell. Obviously the over-the-top blood spewing and that one gross shot of Owen’s “long-lost” brother shot in half in a bathtub was meant to reference and satrizie violent mob movies, but it fell short of feeling earned. The weirdness of the Maniac sub-stories is rooted in the overall style of the show; going full Tarantino was a step outside of that box.  Read more…

Netflix’s ‘Maniac’ has a surprisingly simple message at its core

TwitterFacebook

Maniac looked like it was going to be A Lot. The first trailer for the Netflix original made it seem like a Black Mirror–style technological dreamscape, with dubious medical practice and high fantasy sequences woven together in the kind of narrative that spins off dozens of thinkpieces with headlines like “What Is Even Going On In Maniac” and “The Maniac Finale, Explained.”

It’s not one of those shows at all.

Yes, technically there is medical malpractice and pseudo-reductive futuristic setting, as well as trippy subplots that take place across a number of time periods and fantastical settings, but to its credit Maniac is 100% not out to blow people’s minds with its weirdness. It wants you to enjoy the weirdness as a means to a very simple endManiac wants you to make a friend.  Read more…

Jonah Hill and Emma Stone wear a lot of hats (and costumes) in weird-ass ‘Maniac’ trailer

TwitterFacebook

The newest trailer for Netflix’s Maniac confirms Emma Stone and Jonah Hill aren’t revisiting their Superbad days—but they are jumping around to plenty of other universes.

Under the influence of a mysterious drug trial, Stone and Hill are seen taking a spooky woodland stroll with Great Gatsby vibes, making a home (and a mullet) in Goon territory, present at a Captain America-esque war tribunal, valiantly hunting something or someone in an homage to Lord of the Rings, crushing a miniature town a la Hereditary, and also doing something with a purple koala/muppet? Maybe?

While we don’t anticipate any direct references to other worlds, Maniac‘s trailer provides an interesting sneak peek into the mind-bending miniseries. Based off of a Norwegian television series of the same name, Maniac follows patients Annie Landsberg (Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Hill) as they attempt to answer one creepy question: “What do you think is wrong with you?” Read more…

Jonah Hill and Emma Stone reunite in Netflix’s ‘Maniac,’ which looks nothing like ‘Superbad’

Jonah Hill and Emma Stone played high school sweethearts more than a decade ago in Greg Mottola’s 2007 comedy, Superbad. Now they’re reuniting on screen for the first time since then in a new Netflix limited series from Beasts of No Nation direct…

The Netflix comedy train just keeps on rolling.

Netflix is getting a bizarre new comedy series starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill called Maniac, and the streaming service gave the world its first look at the series on Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

Maniac is being made by Cary Fukunaga, the director of True Detective and Beasts of No Nation, and is a remake of a Norwegian series by the same name, which originally aired in 2014.

Netflix’s remake, which is described as a black comedy, will focus on Emma Stone’s and Jonah Hill’s characters — two strangers who participate in a pharmaceutical trial that doesn’t quite go exactly as planned. Read more…
