Which of ‘Maniac’s’ pill hallucination stories was the best?

A lot went down on Maniac. What appeared to be a story about two people in a clinical trial that is meant to cure humanity of its mental ills turned out to be a wild ride through the human psyche, complete with seemingly unrelated vignettes that took place across timelines and realities.

These jaunts into Owen and Annie’s minds were some of the highlights of the show, but which of then was the best standalone story?

See the rankings below, in descending order.

5. The Mob Prince Blues

Maniac

The story of Owen the mob prince is more muted than the other vignettes with one big exception: it’s violent as hell. Obviously the over-the-top blood spewing and that one gross shot of Owen’s “long-lost” brother shot in half in a bathtub was meant to reference and satrizie violent mob movies, but it fell short of feeling earned. The weirdness of the Maniac sub-stories is rooted in the overall style of the show; going full Tarantino was a step outside of that box.  Read more…

Jonah Hill and Emma Stone wear a lot of hats (and costumes) in weird-ass ‘Maniac’ trailer

TwitterFacebook

The newest trailer for Netflix’s Maniac confirms Emma Stone and Jonah Hill aren’t revisiting their Superbad days—but they are jumping around to plenty of other universes.

Under the influence of a mysterious drug trial, Stone and Hill are seen taking a spooky woodland stroll with Great Gatsby vibes, making a home (and a mullet) in Goon territory, present at a Captain America-esque war tribunal, valiantly hunting something or someone in an homage to Lord of the Rings, crushing a miniature town a la Hereditary, and also doing something with a purple koala/muppet? Maybe?

While we don’t anticipate any direct references to other worlds, Maniac‘s trailer provides an interesting sneak peek into the mind-bending miniseries. Based off of a Norwegian television series of the same name, Maniac follows patients Annie Landsberg (Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Hill) as they attempt to answer one creepy question: “What do you think is wrong with you?” Read more…

The Netflix comedy train just keeps on rolling.

Netflix is getting a bizarre new comedy series starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill called Maniac, and the streaming service gave the world its first look at the series on Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

Maniac is being made by Cary Fukunaga, the director of True Detective and Beasts of No Nation, and is a remake of a Norwegian series by the same name, which originally aired in 2014.

Netflix’s remake, which is described as a black comedy, will focus on Emma Stone’s and Jonah Hill’s characters — two strangers who participate in a pharmaceutical trial that doesn’t quite go exactly as planned. Read more…

Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill AND Steve Martin crash James Franco’s ‘SNL’ monologue

TwitterFacebook

James Franco started tonight’s Saturday Night Live monologue bummed that the show brass doesn’t do anything fancy for a host’s fourth time at the rodeo, like give him a Five-Timers jacket, or even write a script. (Humblebrag noted, Jimmy James.)

So instead, Franco took random audience questions. But one woman’s thoughtful and probing question about the actor’s career trajectory was overshadowed by an awfully familiar face poking around behind her.

If it isn’t longtime Franco friend Seth Rogen – who just “happened” to win the ticket lottery for the very weekend his buddy was hosting. “Luckily I’m a huge [musical guest] SZA fan so it worked out,” Rogen shared. Read more…
