5 New Year’s resolutions that can help the environment in 2019

TwitterFacebook

At the start of January, people typically make resolutions about health, money, and relationships, with the mindset of “new year, new me.” In 2019, they need to add environmental goals to the list.

Last year was one of the hottest years on record, and rising temperatures along with climate-related changes are affecting the Arctic, wildlife, and people across the world. In November, a national report confirmed climate change is hurting Americans’ quality of life, especially in lower-income neighborhoods and in some communities of color.

Resolutions for 2019 the tech industry should really, really consider

TwitterFacebook

We’re barely 24 hours into 2019 and some of the tech industry is already re-trodding or doubling down on the the blunders, bad looks, and irresponsible policy of 2018. Sadly, we did not leave milquetoast PR statements and broken promises in the past where they belong.

But guys, it’s never too late to change! Let 2019 ring in the New You (even if that idea, for us flawed humans, is mostly BS).

As tech employees, their bosses, and the pundits (like me) shuffle back into work today, here are a few resolutions we hope the tech brass really, really considers. We make these suggestions not just to criticize, but in the hopes that tech actually can be a force for good — as long as the industry holds itself accountable to its own (not even that) lofty standards. Miss Piggy rings in 2019 with, well, the most Miss Piggy tweet imaginable

TwitterFacebook

New Year’s Resolutions are all well and good, but what about those of us who are already damn near perfect?

Miss Piggy is one such individual who understands the New Year’s predicament faced by countless perfect people across the land.

Her first tweet of 2019 put paid to any notions of self-improvement for the year ahead.

New Year, New Moi? HA!! As if. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, sweetiepic.twitter.com/g10bfiUEWU

Couldn’t agree more, to be quite frank.

6 reasons I no longer subscribe to ‘New Year, New You’ BS

TwitterFacebook

And now for “27 ways to feel bad about yourself while the last piece of Christmas pudding you’ve ‘indulged’ in is still making its way through your intestinal tract…”

As the new year dawns, you’ll notice that without ANY space to breathe whatsoever, what was once a newsfeed saturated with sequins, pints and party platters becomes one bursting at the seams with resistance bands, Nutri Bullets and all manner of “New Year, New You” rhetoric.

If that works for you, great. If it doesn’t, keep on reading…

If you find all of this relentless (and, at times, negative) then join the club. I’ve decided I’m over it. I’ve clicked the “unsubscribe” button and it’s incredibly liberating. Read more…

10 social media New Year’s resolutions that will make your online life a little better

TwitterFacebook

As 2018 comes to a close, it’s only a matter of time before New Year’s resolution posts start rolling into your timelines.

But the barrage of empty promises and half-hearted resolutions on social media just make me want to scale back on my social media usage altogether. Forget hitting the gym more or learning new skills. From subtweeting less to toning down my finsta, here are 10 social media resolutions I will probably (not) follow through with in 2019.

1. Stop checking Twitter right before bed

Me: Early to bed, early to rise…but let me just check twitter for 5 minutes before I sleep

The time has come for Mark Zuckerberg to reveal his 2018 personal challenge

TwitterFacebook

Mark Zuckerberg is using 2018 as even further incentive to fix the hot mess that is Facebook.

On Thursday Zuck announced — via Facebook of course — his annual “personal challenge.” It’s a tradition he started in 2009 in which he kicks off each new year by committing to learning something new.

Over the years, he says, he’s visited every state in the U.S., run 365 miles, built an AI for his own house, read 25 books, and even learned Mandarin. But in 2018 the Facebook CEO will work toward fixing important issues on the social media platform.

Good.
