The Good

Easy to make into a habit • especially with short sessions • Can meditate anywhere you have the headset • Calming and approachable

The Bad

Limited choices that don’t update — after a while you want more than the six options • Doesn’t take full advantage of VR

The Bottom Line

FlowVR is a great place to get comfortable with the idea of meditation — and feels like a mini-vacation.

Oculus starts selling $299 Go business bundle

Facebook’s virtual reality arm is beginning to sell its Oculus Go headsets directly to business users with a dedicated bundle. Starting today, business users can order a business bundle with a 64GB Oculus Go headset for $299. Oculus launches its first app focused on watching television

Oculus is launching a TV app for users to check out streaming video content on a big virtual screen on the Oculus Go headset. After a long wait, the Oculus Go VR headset (32 GB) is finally for sale, and you can snag it for $199 on Amazon.

We know it’s annoying that it’s 2018 and teleportation isn’t a thing yet — but we are not kidding when we say that the Oculus Go is the next best thing.

So, why is the Oculus Go so badass? And why is everyone (including Mashable’s own tech reporter) so enamored with it?

We’re so glad you asked.

For starters, it’s a truly standalone headset. That means no separately purchased junk, no giant gaming desktop required, no pricey video card, and no trying to make sure that your phone stays in the headset (that is, if your phone is even compatible) — all nuisances you’d run into with VR gear like the HTC Vive, the Samsung Gear VR, or the Google Daydream View. (No shade, we’re just sayin’.) Read more…

Facebook is hiring a team to design its own chips

TwitterFacebook

Facebook is assembling a team to design proprietary semiconductors.

The social network seeks a manager to head an “end-to-end SoC/ASIC, firmware and driver development organization,” reports Bloomberg, citing job listings and sources familiar with the matter.

It’s not yet clear what exactly these chips will power. The job posting seeks “expertise to build custom solutions targeted at multiple verticals including AI/ML” (artificial intelligence and machine learning).

This means we could be looking at something that’s going to power the AI in Facebook’s upcoming smart speaker, which the company planned to announce in July, but delayed indefinitely among the kerfuffle of Cambridge Analytica. Amazon is also at work on in-house AI chips to power Alexa in future Echo models.  Read more…

First impressions of the $199 Oculus Go VR headset

Virtual reality seems to have become a very tired topic to consumers, products are still getting made though because big tech companies are convinced of its eventual ubiquity. The challenge now becomes attracting attention from people whose attention spans for what you’re selling has perhaps already timed out. Oculus Go is the latest VR hardware […]

The Oculus Go might be coming very, very soon

TwitterFacebook

Hey, remember the Oculus Go?

Neither did we — until we saw two photos shared to Reddit by user “bekris” (spotted by Upload VR) of what Bekris claims is the Oculus Go’s developer kit. We’ll be honest, this doesn’t look like developer kit packaging; it totally looks like retail packaging.

Bekris claims the photos were tweeted by Jesper Gaarsdal, software engineer at Unity Studios, and by the Twitter account of Unity Studios itself. Both tweets were removed shortly after being posted.

If the photo is legitimate, the retail release of the first ever phone-free standalone VR device could be just around the corner. And the first buyers could have over 1000 apps, games, and movies at their fingertips.  Read more…
