The Large Hadron Collider has produced a great deal of incredible science, most famously the Higgs Boson — but physicists at CERN, the international organization behind the LHC, are already looking forward to the next model. And the proposed Future Circular Collider, at 100 kilometers or 62 miles around, would be quite an upgrade.

The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to a trio of researchers whose work in lasers enabled all kinds of new experiments and treatments. Arthur Ashkin is the primary recipient, sharing the prize with Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland; notably, the latter is the first woman to receive the prize (in physics, to […]

Stephen Hawking’s voice is speeding through space.
The famed cosmologist, who passed away in March at the age of 76, always dreamed of flying to space, and now, his voice is on a journey through the cosmos.
Greek composer Vangelis, best known for composing the theme for the film Chariots of Fire, created an original score that reportedly spans six and a half minutes and features Hawking’s own voice halfway through.
That piece of music was sent out from a satellite dish in central Spain today as Hawking was laid to rest in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Read more…

Researchers create a real cloaking device
Researcher Amanda D. Hanford at Pennsylvania State University has created a real cloaking device that can route sound waves around an object, making it invisible to some sensing techniques. From the report: Hanford and her team set out to engineer a metamaterial that can allow the sound waves to bend around the object as if […]

The volume of data particle physicists have to sort through at the Large Hadron Collider is staggering, and it’s about to increase by an order of magnitude. To cope with this torrent of data, CERN is turning to machine learning, offering prizes for AI models that can cut through the clutter and help make the next breakthrough.

In 2009, Stephen Hawking ran an experiment that required champagne, balloons, and hors d’oeuvres, to demonstrate that backward time travel probably isn’t possible.
It was a time travelers’ party — but no one showed. And that was the point.
“I have experimental evidence that time travel is not possible,” Hawking told reporters at the Seattle Science Festival in 2012. “I gave a party for time-travelers, but I didn’t send out the invitations until after the party. I sat there a long time, but no one came.”
