The Switch has been a monster hit for Nintendo by nearly every measure. The convertible console is precisely the success the company needed after a few years in the wildness following the Wii U flop and smartphone foot dragging. Strategy Analytics predicts more good things for the platform, predicting that Nintendo will surpass Sony in […]

For almost two weeks, I’ve been living life like it was 1994 thanks to Sony’s PlayStation Classic.

The $99.99 system, like Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classic before it, is yet another miniaturized game console pre-loaded with games from a bygone era.

Sony’s tiny console is a fraction of the size of the original (and unfortunately doesn’t play original PS1 CDs) and comes with two faithfully reproduced controllers.

It’s one of the nicest throwback tech products in years and made me nostalgic of the early days of games with 3D graphics, while simultaneously making me realize I’m now old. I was seven when the PlayStation launched in Japan in 1994 and nine when my childhood best friend got one for Christmas two years later and we got to eventually play classics like Rayman, Crash Bandicoot, and Final Fantasy VII in his attic. Best Black Friday 2018 toy deals: Legos, Hatchimals, Star Wars, Xbox One X, PlayStation 4

Signs that you’re a full-fledged old: The gift you’re most excited about is a Dyson vacuum and the person with a sack of gifts you’re awaiting the most is the wine delivery guy. Can’t we just go back to the good old days of flipping through the toy catalog over a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?

You know the young-ins in your life deserve that joy — what you may not know is what the kids are into these days. (Hot tip: kids play with drones now, not toy planes). And with Toys ‘R’ Us gone, there’s not really a store (or a Black Friday ad with more than two pages of toys) to show you what’s big.  Read more…

PlayStation is skipping E3 for the first time ever in 2019

PlayStation will not be making an appearance at the next E3.

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that PlayStation will not be attending the upcoming E3 show in 2019, Game Informer reported Thursday. Not only that, it won’t even host an independent press conference around E3 — something that Electronic Arts has done.

This will be PlayStation’s first absence from E3 since the very first show in 1995.

The Entertainment Software Association announced its upcoming 2019 E3 show Thursday but made no mention of PlayStation in the press release circulated via email. In the press release, the ESA listed “the leading video game companies already committed to participating in E3 2019,” which included Microsoft/Xbox, Nintendo, Activision, Bethesda, Capcom, Ubisoft, and a handful of other heavy-hitters that pretty much always make an appearance. Best gifts for gamers: What to get for the gamer in your life

TwitterFacebook

Shopping for a gamer sounds like it should be easy, but getting them the right gift can be a bit more complicated than you think. The good news: there’s so much to choose from. The bad news: there’s so much to choose from.

It’s even worse when you consider all the different kinds of gamers out there. From those who pledge allegiance to the PC master race to Nintendo purists and everything in between, it isn’t easy finding just the right gift to add to their setup. But if you nail it, you won’t find anyone more grateful than a gamer.

When shopping for a gamer, first determine your desired price point. For most, you’ll be able to grab a couple games under $100 and call it a day. Accessories like controllers and charging docks are another great mid-range price point. The next step up will be things like gaming consoles or a gaming laptop, which will run you a couple hundred. If you’re looking to go all out and treat the gamer in your life to an epic gift, a brand new PC rig and setup could clock in at around $4,000.  Read more…

Sony’s PlayStation Classic uses an open-source emulator to play its games

The worm has turned, it seems. Emulators, which let people run old console games on their computers, were once the scourge of the gaming industry. Now Sony is using one of the very pieces of software the industry decried as the basis for its PlayStation Classic retro console.

There’s a new PS4 Pro and it’s much quieter than the original

There’s a new Sony PS4 Pro and it’s much quieter than the original. Right now, it’s only available in a Red Dead Redemption bundle but eventually, it will likely be available as a standalone product, too. The new CUH-7200 version reportedly dropped the console’s noise from 50 decibles to 44 decibels though as EuroGamer notes, […]
