The polar vortex will return, this time with the coldest temps of the year

TwitterFacebook

It’s coming back.

The polar vortex — a deep mass of frigid air that rotates around the top of the world — has been knocked off balance, which means it’s liable to spill cold air into the U.S. Although winter temperatures in the lower 48 states have generally been normal or warmer than average, a blast of intensely cold air first spilled down to the Midwest and the northeastern U.S. around January 20. Now, atmospheric scientists say it’s likely to return at the end of January.

For many places, that means it will be the coldest stretch of the year.

“It’s going to get really cold at the end of January and early February,” Jeff Weber, a meteorologist with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, an earth sciences research organization, said in an interview. Read more…

Blame a wobbly polar vortex for why you’re so damn cold

TwitterFacebook

It’s coming.

The polar vortex — a spinning mass of winter-chilled Arctic air — has become wobbly and weak. It’s expected to slosh down and blanket a considerable part of the East Coast and Midwest with frigid polar air beginning this weekend, bringing sub zero temperatures to some Midwestern places.

“We’re gonna freeze,” John Martin, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said in an interview.

The polar vortex typically lives in the high Arctic each winter. So why does this mass of frigid air sometimes swirl so far down south and away from its home?

Don’t hate me, but record-setting cold and snow are about to sweep across the U.S.

TwitterFacebook

It’s April. I know. Flowers should be blooming, outdoor lunches should be starting.

But that springtime reality is a long way off for tens of millions of Americans. For people living across the Upper Midwest, Great lakes, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and New England, an Arctic blast and series of storm systems will make it look and feel more like February during the next week.

There are now three separate storms threatening to bring snow to parts of this swath of the country between April 4 and April 12, as bitterly cold air — courtesy of the polar vortex — blasts its way south and east to the Atlantic seaboard.  Read more…

‘Beast from the East’ brings snow to UK, mainland Europe along with frigid temperatures

Europeans are feeling the effects of the “Beast from the East,” which refers to frigid winds blowing east to west from Siberia toward the UK. Temperatures have plunged as much as 20 degrees Celsius, or 36 degrees Fahrenheit, below average for this ti…

It will be warmer at the North Pole next week than much of Europe, as sea ice vanishes

In what seems to be becoming an annual occurrence, temperatures at the North Pole are about to reach or possibly exceed the freezing point this week as the North Atlantic and the North Pacific Oceans inject unusually mild air into the Arctic.

Wednesday will be the warmest February day ever recorded along the East Coast

The East Coast feels more like May on Wednesday than February, with temperatures of at least 30 degrees Fahrenheit above average for this time of year. All-time record high temperatures are being set from Florida to the northern tip of Maine, as a so…

Temperature rises above freezing near North Pole, as frigid air slinks toward Europe

The temperature at a weather station at the very top of Greenland, at one of the closest points of any land mass to the North Pole, has risen above the freezing mark of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0 degrees Celsius, during the past two days.

The polar vortex just split in two. Get ready for some wild weather from Europe to the U.S.

TwitterFacebook

The polar vortex, the notorious swirl of winds around a low pressure area in the upper atmosphere over the Arctic, has split in two. Since the polar vortex tends to be associated with some of the coldest air during the winter, the split — which is more like a temporary separation than a lasting divorce — means that ultra cold air is on the move.

A split in the polar vortex may sound like a complicated weather concept, but it has huge consequences for weather patterns from Canada to Eurasia. The latest split is likely to put Western Europe and much of Eurasia into the deep freeze for the rest of February, and will offer glimpses of hope for snow lovers along the U.S. East Coast.  Read more…

‘Bomb cyclone’ to pummel East Coast, followed by a polar vortex-related cold snap

A remarkable storm system is now taking shape along the East Coast, threatening the major cities of the Northeast with near blizzard conditions and full-on polar vortex-related cold, while bringing historic snows to the Southeast.
The blizzard …
