Uber messes up Facebook ad by confusing Puerto Rican and Cuban flags

TwitterFacebook

Uber may operate in more than 80 countries, but it still had a difficult time understanding the nuances of country flags.

In what appeared to be an attempt to recognize and celebrate the anniversary of Puerto Rico’s flag via a Facebook ad, the ride-hailing giant actually shared a photo with an image of Cuba’s flag.

Ay @Uber!!! Trying to congratulate Puerto Rico, using the Cuban flag. Even in Shutter stock says “View on the window with the Cuban flag“ #fail pic.twitter.com/xW0CZFyAJT

Yes, they look a bit similar as in they’re both red, white, and blue and have stripes and stars. But come on. They’re different and anyone could tell the difference and fact-check with the quickest of Google searches.  Read more…

Trump says he turned down Time’s ‘Person of the Year,’ and no one’s buying it

TwitterFacebook

Unless you repressed all memories of 2016 (and who could blame you), you’ll remember that Time named Donald Trump “Person of the Year.” Now, the president is claiming that the magazine asked him again this year but, like, urgh who can even be bothered?

In a tweet Friday, the president took time from his busy schedule of getting absolutely nothing from his agenda done to make a bold claim about rejecting the magazine’s honor for 2017.

Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named “Man (Person) of the Year,” like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!

A mesh network spontaneously erupts in the US and helps connect Puerto Rico

When goTenna put out their Mesh device earlier this year, I thought the off-grid gadgets would be great for an emergency kit or back country hike. But it turns out that I underestimated the demand for a resilient, user-powered mesh network: dedic…

San Juan’s mayor has a message for Moe from ‘The Simpsons’

TwitterFacebook

Moe the bartender and San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz both know what it’s like to have paper towels thrown at them.

At least, that’s the message from The Simpsons, which released a video on Friday night announcing the show had raised $25,000 for the people of Puerto Rico.

Apparently, Cruz appreciated the message.

Thank you Moe for understanding how we feel. We have very little power but having @TheSimpsons in our corner fills our hearts with light.

— Carmen Yulín Cruz (@CarmenYulinCruz) November 4, 2017

The show made an appeal for aid after the first episode of Season 29, which also got a response from Cruz. Looks like it’s the start of a perfectly cromulent relationship.  Read more…
