You might know Pearl Jam as the world’s most famous grunge band, or the soundtrack of your adolescent angst, or a group of talented yet totally reluctant rock stars. But Pearl Jam is also famous for taking a stand — and it’s doing exactly that in Seattle this week.

The group is currently leveraging its star power to draw attention to the city’s homelessness crisis. With a pair of benefit concerts dubbed the Home Shows, a day of volunteerism between the performances on Aug. 8 and 10, and a successful effort to raise at least $10 million for the community, advocates say Pearl Jam has galvanized Seattleites in unprecedented ways.  Read more…

Seattle gets its first staffed Amazon pickup delivery hub

You’d think Seattle would be first in line for all things Amazon, but apparently the online retailer’s home city didn’t yet have a dedicated brick and mortar Amazon pickup location. Seattle reverses controversial tax Amazon opposed, just a month after approving it

In an embarrassing and mystifying about-face, the Seattle City Council has repealed a tax it passed unanimously just a month ago that would require large companies to pay a fixed amount per employee; the money would have been used to combat homelessness. Amazon was the most high-profile opponent of the tax, but not the only one by far, and apparently the Council decided that fighting the business community was “not a winnable battle.”

Seattle is leading the way.

The city is on the verge of tossing out old convictions for marijuana possession, and with legalization spreading across the country it’s past time other cities and states follow suit.

According to The Hill, officials are looking to vacate old possession charges which have dogged 542 people over the years. In a statement, Seattle’s Mayor spoke to the necessity of trying to undue the damage wrought by years of failed policy.

“Vacating charges for misdemeanor marijuana possession is a necessary step to correct the injustices of what was a failed war on drugs, which disproportionately affected communities of color in Seattle,” wrote Mayor Jenny Durkan. Read more…
